Interview with Martin Hedington

What's the story behind your latest book?
The story is about overcoming the mental constraints that mainstream, apologist media and most authorities seem to force down the public's throat in most countries these days, regarding acceptance of the status-quo in respect of seemingly allowing violent criminals apparent carte blanche when it comes to the fundamental human right of peace and safety. By arming oneself with the tools, the mental attitude, the resources and the equipment necessary, a person can become fully prepared for either avoiding, dissuading or if necessary defending against the chances taken by unfortunate opportunistic criminals and their increasingly violent tendencies. As opposed to abdicating one's solemn duty towards one's self, one's family and one's community.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle Previewer for PC
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Mark Coker; Joel Friedlander; shelfbuzz.com
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My father, being like myself Royal Navy, I 'grew up' in multiple countries, UK, France, Malta, Mauritius, Marseilles and South Africa.
When did you first start writing?
I started editing Conditioned Victim? for a friend and colleague in 2002 but only started researching, then writing extensively when I reviewed and upgraded the original version to the eBook offer, in 2014.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My motivation in becoming an indie author was to allow more people worldwide to access a book that became relatively popular in South Africa in its original soft cover format from 2002. An eBook allows far more flexibility, additional data, linked videos and source referances, plus -for a 'how to' at least-, the added feature of accessing the sections that the reader may be most interested in first.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Without doubt fundamentally. Mark Coker and his site have facilitated me in realising that once one has an effective plan to start with, an entire 'road map' so to speak from start to finish, then you just have to stick with the plan and do your own thing. If you get anything wrong along the way, Mark and his team have seen all the errors before and know how to correct them for you.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Self expression.
What do your fans mean to you?
Having fans merely means I must have helped them somehow. In public, or community safety, the most frustrating phrases I ever hear are; "Well, what can anyone do?" and "It all happened so fast, I couldn't do a thing" or my personal favourite; "Somebody should do something!" Now, with our new eBook, a reader can pick and choose from scores of tricks, tips and tweaks, most of them either free or very inexpensive, and ease their mind a little on the options available to them.
What are you working on next?
Next stop is getting to grips with a blog to support the book, my inbox chokes if it suffers more than fifty mails a day.
Who are your favorite authors?
Mark Coker, Stephen King, Frederick Pohl, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Joyce Lee Malcolm.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Amazon, Smashwords, Hatchette, Random House.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I research and study the increasingly annoying assault on personal freedoms mounted by various governments, 'lamestream' media, and countless apologist writers. Otherwise, I study the many fascinating propaganda and other psychological techniques employed over the last 100 years or so by worldwide authorities in controlling ordinary, law-abiding, peaceful honest people.
What do you read for pleasure?
Read for pleasure? No. For entertainment, education, information and relaxation, yes.
How do you approach cover design?
I approach cover design by paying a professional, I'm a writer, not a designer.
