Interview with Mary Malone

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social Media, newspapers, tv and radio.

I have been lucky with all of my books. Generally a particular plot topic becomes a news interest and I use this as an angle to further promote the story, give it a fresh perspective.
Describe your desk
Messy! It’s a beautiful mahogany writing bureau. I have numerous motivators around me, a dream catcher overhead, dictionary in the drawer, loads of pens and notebooks for reminders and a beautiful green lamp that my husband bought me as a present...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in West Cork, Ireland.
The freedom and trustworthiness of rural Ireland certainly plays a part. However, I spent 16 years in Dublin and the two very different locations have formed a perfect blend in my story telling.

The love of a good story is something I inherited from my father. His parting words on his deathbed were ‘why don’t you write a book? You’re always reading them!’ And that was the challenge/promise I took upon myself as part of the grieving process.
When did you first start writing?
2003
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have just completed ghostwriting a memoir for a young lady with an acquired brain injury.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I’m not technically indie but publish the e formats myself.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smash words is an easy to use tool that allows me control over my ebook titles.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The magic of seeing a story come together, despite heartache, hard work and serious self doubt.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Without readers, there’s no reason to write.
What are you working on next?
I’m currently publishing the book I have ghost written. After that, it’s a blank canvass. I’ll see what happens.
Who are your favorite authors?
Sidney Sheldon, Jo Jo Moyes, Sinead Crowley, Caroline Grace Cassidy, Maeve Binchy, Patricia Scanlan.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I’m lucky to be able...I love life, I love living. I expect a surprise around every corner....I’m seldom disappointed.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working full-time, reading, walking, playing squash, spending time with family and friends.
