Interview with Mary Quast

Published 2023-02-07.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance of course! I love strong shifters with a soft side. Contemporary Westerns are pretty hot. However, I've been hooked on Romantic Comedy lately. Love Pippa Grant and Claire Kingsley. I especially love stories with the setting around a brewery or winery. I'm a sucker for locations in Michigan.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Mid- Michigan spending summers at the family cottage on the lake with gram. She was a true story teller and I learned the skill from her. A Native American neighbor joined her with tales of legends. Inspiration for my stories came from those stories as well as traveling and the people I met. I'm telling a story constantly in my head.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle. It's an older version but I have a wonderful leather cover. I feel like I'm holding a fancy book.
Describe your desk
Complete organized chaos. I plan to give my home office a new look and possibly get rid of the desk.
When did you first start writing?
I always wrote. When I was teen, friends would often ask me to write a romantic story for them. My first novel, Painted Soul, was based on a short story I wrote in a journal when I was 16 staying a summer in England with friends. I began my writing career in 1999, 20 years after that journal entry. I received a degree for fine art and I've been told my writing is much like my paintings and drawings, visual and sensual.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest contemporary romance series is a sub-series of the 1 Night Stand collection published by Decadent Publishing. The books are Native American shifters who are in or recently retired from the military. These heroes are from the Chippewa tribe of Michigan. Influence for these stories came from tales a Chippewa friend told around summertime bonfires.
