Interview with Matthew Corbett

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in rural Shropshire, (United Kingdom). Born in the late 1970`s, my love of nostalgic movies, stories and childhood memories is what makes me tick. I thrive on the `good old days`, and enjoy listening to anything that reminds me of how things were. My past childhood was a warm and solid one, which allowed for plenty of experiences - from movies, to music, to . . . well, you get what I`m trying to say.

Anyhow, the Ghost Driver series is my largest and most complex of my amateur writing career and if you do get the opportunity to read the story right through to the end, then I`m sure that the reasons for my answer above will, undoubtedly, become clear.
When did you first start writing?
I started back in my mid 20`s, (1998-ish).
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book/work, is a story about a Detective who`s wife has passed away. He sees her from time to time as she manifests herself, in order to help him solve a particular crime, or to get out of an awkward situation.

The heartache between his wife`s world and his own often plays on his mind as he trudges through the daily mutiny of life - the walls between her world and his own, becoming thinner by the second.

Throughout the whole story arc, Shure goes through plenty of events and, by the end of it all, will get to understand who exactly is the Ghost Driver and, more importantly, why.

I was heavily influenced by Basic Instinct, Lethal Weapon and many other 80`s/90`s films to boot. The music in my mind whilst writing the story is typically 80`s too.

Either way, I`m not saying that it`s perfect, but can say with 100% certainty, that Vapour, Essence and Effluvium are my babies.

Plus, the story arc hasn`t yet stopped either. Effluvium isn`t the end? I hear you ask . . . well, judging by my poor keyboard, there`s still more to come.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am witnessing of reading other peoples thoughts and ideas. Every film I watch, every book or magazine that I read, every piece of music that I listen to, is made up of other peoples ideals and ideas to boot. If you go through life being influenced by everything, then who are you really?
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
So far I`m new to Smashwords, but I`d like to think that one day somebody will read the Ghost Driver story arc and enjoy it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing a whole host of characters come to life. Living with them inside your very soul, welling up with tears of sadness and joy as I write shows just how emotional things can get for a writer. That`s the joy!
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything in fairness, as, without them, who are you writing for?
What are you working on next?
Ghost Driver Volume 4.
What is your writing process?
Write from the heart and also, to do it when you`re in the right frame of mind/mood. Go back, proof read your work, tweak it, then cross your fingers.
How do you approach cover design?
I finish off the story in question and then base my design decision on the content.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading and writing, (obviously), but also like spending time with my fiancée, as well as playing the odd game and watching modern TV series`.
