Interview with Matthew Lee

Published 2018-09-03.
Which genre do you write and why?
Good question. On SmashWords I primarily write Hotwife or Cuckold fiction. This niche first caught my attention just after puberty, well before I even had my first girlfriend. I found an exciting yet bitter-sweet element I couldn't resist.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm all over the map. I read nonfiction and fiction equally. I most recently finished Magician; Master, by Raymond Feist, for the fifth time, and then began On Writing: A Memoir Of The Craft by Stephen King.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing at age twelve, but only began exploring this genre a few years ago.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love the control one has over their own fate. Too often corporate publishers decide for us what to read. With Indie press, the public decides. If you're good, you'll survive. If not, you'll learn to be good or quit. How many classics have been lost to a junior editor?
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Pure creative joy. As my niche suggests, I've not followed a conventional path. Virtually all stories have elements of reality in them; situations or scenarios where I've actually participated. I love taking myself back to those moments and reliving them and sharing that with my readers.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Writing is hard, lonely work. I get fan mail everyday and ninety-nine percent of it is complimentary, encouraging, and inspirational. The one percent wants my to write something specific for them.
What are you working on next?
I will relate an experience I had while living in Miami. I visited my doctor for a basic check-up and discovered her office had an all female staff. Things did not remain professional.
Who are your favorite authors?
Kurt Vonnegut, Frank Herbert, Robert E. Howard, Howard Zinn, Thomas Harris, Brian Greene...
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read, I bicycle, I hang out with my lovely wife.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, but I remember the first story I ever read that had an impact on me. I was perhaps seven or eight. The title was "In Hiding" and it was about a gifted child that had to keep his intelligence hidden from adults. He mastered several techniques for allowing his genius to manifest yet not make any adults uncomfortable.
