Interview with Maya Spore

When did you first start writing?
In 2010, after receiving positive feedback on my role playing. After that, In started publishing short stories on a website which grew larger and larger.
What's the story behind your latest book?
One day, I heard a dutch song on the radio that roughly translates to 'the day the sunlight stopped shining'. It was about a man who lost the love of his life, but I started pondering about how it would be when the sun would be really gone.

So I got behind my computer and started writing about that feeling, adding more and more plot into it. The disappearance of the sun became a mere event on the background of a larger secret that unfolded itself from ancient times, something I had felt like writing about already a long time before.

And then, the book started to write itself and things in the news started popping up which only seemed to exist to be added to the story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like to focus on the core of being a writer, which is writing of course. Looking for a publisher seems to be a process that consumes so much valuable time and can make someone really feel depressed. I love to be able to say out loud, "It's done!" and then see it online only a few minutes later. It's the fastest way to share your creations with the world.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Receiving feedback and bringing a bit of joy or suspense to my readers. I am a very creative person and writing is a way to share some of those creations with others.
What are you working on next?
The continuation of my last novel, which will bring again well-known elements of our past together in a different setting.
Who are your favorite authors?
Isaac Asimov, Stephen King, George RR Martin, Terry Goodkind to name a few.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact there's again 24h ahead to accomplish the many things I'd like to do. I always fall short in time to complete everything which is sitting in my head.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I remember a story in elementary school about a ship that got back in time and was captured by pirates. I received a maximum score for it :-)
What is your writing process?
First comes the inspiration, which comes usually only a flash.
When I think it has enough potential, I start plotting out the story. Chapter descriptions in a few lines about what will happen. I'll also do the necessary research in this phase.
Then I start to write it all out. More research to have the details perfect.
And finally, the feedback and editing phase, where I usually don't tend to change a whole lot in the story anymore.
How do you approach cover design?
I am a person who likes to have control over every step. I have to admit alas that I can't be good in everything. So I usually come up with an idea or some inspiration while browsing the Internet, and ask a more talented friend to make it better.
I wish I had the money to order covers though.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working in some way. My job, or at home fixing something to improve things again a little bit. I like progress and having a plan to get to a better place.
