Interview with Melanie James

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life! Life is all around us, every day. No matter how we feel, life goes on.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With my family. I'm married and have 2 kids, 3 step-kids and an adorable grand-baby. I love to read, cook and bake. My passion in the summer is my flower beds and garden. I find it very therapeutic. I also love to take our dogs down to the beach and let them play. I love to go camping and hiking as well.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually word of mouth or I search for what's new! I have a list of favorite authors I love to follow as well.
How do you approach cover design?
Professionally. I have two different cover artists that I use. They are both insanely talented and understand what I want. I tell them what I am looking for and they work their magic!
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance! Any type of romance from chicklit, to paranormal to action and adventure. If it is romance and has a HEA, count me in!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Hi! My name is Melanie and I'm a Kindle Fire addict!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth! Nothing sells a book better than a friend telling their friends how great a book was that they just finished!
Describe your desk
A mess!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town, just outside of Pittsburgh, PA. We didn't have a lot of money, so I always used my imagination for play and to dream of a better life. I think this is where my love for stories comes from. Always dreaming of something extraordinary!
When did you first start writing?
I've always written. I can't remember a time in my life, where I wasn't writing something down.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to have total control of my works. From the cover, to the story, to the marketing process. There are so many talented cover artists, editors and proofreaders out there. There are also many great distribution sites like Smashwords, Amazon and Barnes & Noble that have opened the world of reading up for indie authors! It's been a fantastic year!
