Interview with Melica Niccole

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the Southeast Side of Columbus, Ohio. As a child, I was more into art and performing arts. As I got older, I started to read and write poetry to express myself and my feelings.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have utilized various book marketing techniques. Some of the techniques that have been effective are word of mouth, social media, and book festivals.
Describe your desk
My desk is usually in a state I call "An organized mess." My desk will have notes and various things spread out on it. Most people are unable to find items on my desk, but I know exactly where everything is located. My desk usually stays this way until I start a new project. When I start a new project, I have to clean the desk and start over.
When did you first start writing?
You can say I started writing at an early age, especially in school. The interesting part was I usually did very well in writing assignments in comparison to other subjects.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is called The Journey to the Truth. This is my third poetry book. It is about a journey to identify the truth about life, love, and all that good stuff.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was motivated to become an indie author because I wanted to be able to control my own marketing techniques, book fairs, and other things related to being an author. It was very important that I did not compromise myself for others.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well, this is my first time using Smashwords. So, I will have to revisit this question in the future.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I absolutely love writing. Writing makes me feel better when I am having a bad day. It makes me smile when I am having a good it. Writing can make life all the more sweeter.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean so much for me. They keep me thinking about all the things I can do and should do. They are encouraging and very supportive.
What are you working on next?
I actually have five books in the works that I have started. Some of these books deal with working with individuals with mental health illnesses, financial management, obtaining the credit score you really want, and more. My experience as a Work Readiness Instructor and Employment Services Specialist will come in handy when finishing to write these books.
Who are your favorite authors?
Some of my favorite authors are Zora Neale Hurston and Ariana Huffington.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am inspired by life. I love every part of life. Good days are great and bad days become lessons. I love to encourage others and show them that there is more to life then the misfortune they have faced.
