Interview with Melissa Jolley

Published 2015-12-02.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I just about remember the first chapter book I ever read. I got it from the school library. I think it was called My Pet Tarantula. I really wanted a tarantula after reading it, but we don't have them in New Zealand... which isn't a bad thing!
How do you approach cover design?
I like simplicity with my covers. Especially if I'm making them! I always start with finding the right cover model/s though. Get them right and everything else falls into place.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read anything... though I can't read when I'm writing. When I read I like to be sucked into the world completely, if I'm trying to build my own world at the same time it just doesn't work. I must admit I really like children's books though... I'm a huge Harry Potter fan!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I generally use the kindle app on my phone as I always have it with me.
When did you first start writing?
I dabbled with writing a number of years ago, but didn't think anymore of it until 2011. I had friends who liked to write and thought, you know what I've always wanted to try that. So I sat and I wrote a paranormal romance. I had no idea what I was doing I just wrote until I got to The End. I was fortunate to meet (online) a lovely lady who had recently been e-published. She gave me MANY pointers on formatting, and was extremely kind and encouraging. Not long later Feral became Wolf's Heart and was published by Breathless Press.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted more control over how I told my stories. I still really like the idea of working with publishing companies, but for now this is the right path for me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The beginning. I love those first chapters, getting to know the characters and putting fresh words and ideas on the page... Anything is possible in the beginning.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids... though sometimes they inspire me to hide under the covers too.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm a New Zealander, I spent my formative years in a small town next to lakes, rivers and mountains. I think that's why I like my heroes to be a bit more down to earth and rugged. Kiwi's are also fiercely proud of their homeland, often to the point of being quite parochial, but they're also travellers with a keen interest in other countries and cultures.
Who are your favorite authors?
I must admit to going a bit girl power on this one. I grew up reading Agatha Christie, thanks to my mum, and I'll still happily pull out a Hercule Poirot even if I've read (or seen) it half a dozen times before. Charlotte Bronte, because I adore Jane Eyre. Jane never becomes, feeble or cruel despite her treatment as a child. Then there's JK Rowling... what can I say that hasn't already been said. She drags me in and holds me by the throat, for days on end, and I walk willingly into her trap everytime.
