Interview with M. J. Roberts

Describe your desk
My laptop in my lap with my feet up on the couch!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
We moved a lot growing up. I was born in Texas and have lived in South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, and Colorado. I had the opportunity to meet a variety of people and cultures.
When did you first start writing?
I did a lot of writing while working on my M.A. in History, but I didn't start writing fiction until my first year of nursing. Everyday was hard and I needed something to relieve the stress.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's a series about a group of people who have the fantastic ability to control the elements. It is a generational series covering the lives of the main characters and their children.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My family!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It is a really easy program with a great guidebook.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting lost in the story. When I write the rest of the world disappears.
What do your fans mean to you?
I try to write with the reader in mind. I want you to laugh and cry with the characters. My sincerest wish is for the reader to gain the same benefit from reading it that I got from writing it.
What are you working on next?
Several different things. Finishing the series, which currently has three books, and possibly a fourth and a prequel as well. I also have a few other books in the works of different genres.
Who are your favorite authors?
Suzanne Collins, Margaret George, Julie Garwood, Margaret Mitchell, and Judith Mcnaught
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The dogs, they get pretty demanding if I don't let them out!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing video games
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
In a variety of ways. I look for genres, authors I like, and suggested books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! I was in elementary school and it was Halloween themed.
What is your writing process?
I come up with the idea and then I think about it for days. Often while trying to go to sleep (hey, I don't have much free time). Most of the time, I have music going in the background to set the mood. Sometimes, I will listen to the same song over and over while I get a scene right in my head.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first one I remember having an impact on me was Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I was in the 6th grade and it felt like I was transported to a different century.
How do you approach cover design?
The cover should link to the book. For example, the cover for Rise of the Elementals is a stylized representation of the medallion worn by the Society of Elementals in the book.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - Female hero, Rite of Passage by Alexei Panshin - my first science fiction, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell - Epic, A Night to Remember by Walter Lord - It inspired my history degree, Henry VIII by Margaret George - another epic
What do you read for pleasure?
Fantasy, romance, historical non-fiction, historical fiction, some science fiction, some crime
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPad
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
