Interview with Merced Davis

What's the story behind your latest book?
Dreaming Fire was influenced by my time in foster care and youth shelters in, and around, the Philadelphia area. It was written for my 17 year old self and all of the children that shared a similar experience.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I received a few responses from agents I queried stating my manuscript was too different for a newcomer. I decided that I didn't want to wait until I wasn't different anymore. I like being different.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has allowed me to express myself and tell my story the way I felt it needed to be told. It allowed me freedom which is priceless for an ex-foster child.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Watching my characters come to life and grow. Only then does the real adventure begin as they take me down paths I never expect.
What do your fans mean to you?
The world! Without them I cannot grow. They are the sun, soil and water to any author.
Why Dragon's?
I dream big! Aidan and Devon were born half dragon, half seer from the begining.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth most of the time but sometimes I like to just browse around.
What do you read for pleasure?
Comics! Growing up with an older brother there were always comics around. I love the artwork and the brilliant storytelling.
Describe your desk
Mobile. I have no desk. I write wherever I can.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in South Philadelphia, in the Italian Market where life never slowed down and the people are passionate. Philadelphia holds a special place in my heart which is why it is the home for many of my characters.
