Interview with Mercedes Del Ray

What topics do you consider to be off limits to write about?
Children having sex or being sexually exploited by adults. No necrophilia. No bestiality. No scat or toilet games. I also find the subject of incest pretty distasteful, although what consenting adults do is their own business - I just don't want to write about it.
What is your writing process?
Think of something kinky. Decide how I can make a story out of it and start writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My mother always says that walking your dog is the way to meet a husband.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Don't be exclusive to Amazon and don't be seduced by their promotions to "help" indie authors sell their work. More people buy my work on Smashwords than on Amazon!
Describe your desk
A mess!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in London and went to a good, strict grammar school. I messed around and didn't work, however I did enjoy English and got my only GCSE in this subject.
When did you first start writing?
I used to write secret diaries of my exploits when I travelled the world. I moved on to blogging and writing product reviews when the Internet arrived.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
A friend who I talk dirty with online told me that I should give it a try.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I am able to spread my smut on more channels.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finishing a book and knowing I've done this all by myself.
What do your fans mean to you?
I only have two on here at the moment, but I am glad they enjoy my work.
What are you working on next?
A book about a couple who meet at the Caister Soul Weekender in Great Yarmouth.
Who are your favorite authors?
It changes all the time. Too many to list. If I did name them, the result would be the length of another book.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
At the moment it's so hot in London, it's the sun shining on me and making me sweat.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Mostly working to eat and pay my bills. Meeting friends and spending time with my family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through my book club, or just browsing online.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do and I am not naming it on here. It was bad.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
"Marianne Dreams" is and still is my favourite children's novel. It scared the pants off me as a ten year old.
How do you approach cover design?
Keep it simple.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
