Interview with Meredith Millen

What do you read for pleasure?
My favorite books are fiction/fantasy. I love reading anything where I can dive into another world and lose myself.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My nook...although I much prefer to have the actual book in my hand, but when that's not an option or I'm traveling I always carry my nook with me.
Describe your desk
My desk is an organized mess of everything from movies, music, scraps of paper with book ideas, and my laptops.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Raleigh, NC where I still live. I spent my summers running around and playing by the lake, ocean, or a pool down in SC. I grew up writing. It was always something I enjoyed and gave me an outlet to deal with things.
When did you first start writing?
I've written for as long as I can remember. I have an old tub of notebooks I used to write in everyday. Maybe one day I'll go back and turn some into more books.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My Searching for Blood series was my outlet for finding my birth family. When I located them I needed a way to deal with the built-up emotions that went along with my search and finding that part of my family. I originally intended to write the actual story, but as I sat down to write this fantasy came to life and I decided to go with it.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me! I wouldn't be where I am today without them, and the inspire me to keep writing. I always love hearing from my fans and hearing what they think of the book. From those conversations I've actually had ideas spark for my next book.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently finishing up Searching for Blood: Fire and Ice, which is the second book in the series.
Who are your favorite authors?
That's a tough question! I have so many favorites! Cassandra Claire, Rick Riordan, Jaz Primo, James Dashner, and Pittacus Lore are just a few.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I'm working for a health insurance company, spending time with my daughter, traveling, reading, or at the gym!
How do you approach cover design?
I have a fantastic friend who designs my covers for me. I give her a few ideas or important things in the book and she takes them and works her magic.

As hard as my decision was, leaving was the only way I could protect Taylin. He had been the only person I had confided my secrets in; the only one I had let close enough to see who I really was. For so long I had been afraid of losing his presence in my life that I kept him at arm’s length before finally giving into my feelings, and now here I was at dinner with someone else on Valentine’s Day.
