Interview with Meredith Miller

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Greeley, Colorado. I think living in a town that was neither too big, nor too small helped develop me as a child. It gave me a sense of wonder and curiosity. Because I was allowed to go visit the neighbours, especially the older ones, I learnt a lot about different types of people and how families can be very different.
When did you first start writing?
To be perfectly honest, just last year. Until then I was a stay at home mom (with a few crafts projects on the side) but it was my husband that told me he needed me to write something. Things developed from there. Don't get me wrong, I always loved books and studied lit in school, but it never occured to me to write, and without my husband and a few other friends, I wouldn't have kept it up.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A compendium for the broken hearted is a book about twenty people. 10 have their hearts broken, and 10 are spared. It shows the reader how sad and how happy things can be. It's a very ambitious project, and I probably will not follow it up for a few years, until I learn more about people.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Debut short story collections have no place in traditional publishing, at least not that I saw. These people are not mistaken for being cautious, but it was what lead me here. Besides, I need to be at home, even with my husband's support, so this fits my schedule better.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's too early to tell, But I think the platform will be absolutely 100% responsible for any success I have in the future. You can't sell ebooks without a distributor (or at least it's really hard.)
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Helping. It is the entire reason for me choosing this sort of writing. I need to help people in any way I can. Not just people from a certain race or situation. I wanted to write a book that could make anyone feel better, understand themselves a little, and learn a little tidbit.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. If I ever have future fans, they will become friends. fingers crossed!
What are you working on next?
Like I said, right now I'm finishing up the compendium. After that I will take a long break and think of a way to write another book that can help people in the same way, without repeating myself.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are some great authors when it comes to social critique and just giving helpful messages. Geiman, Rowling, Goodkind. Surprisingly most of them are fantasy writers. A fellow author group member (who later became a friend and introduced me to smashwords) said that fantasy makes it easy to talk about realistic things. Andrew Mowere now has his own book that he calls a symbolic fantasy, so I guess he meant it.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family, as well as how wonderful things can be. you can't enjoy life very well from a bed.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
raising kids, mostly. I do a lot of babysitting.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I often look for free books or samples, because it is always surprising how many great books go obscure.

Twenty stories are meant to make you, in turn, very sad and very happy. There are about ten themes which are discussed in the book in both Breaks, which try to capture the instant a person's heart breaks, as well as Hearts, which are much sweeter in nature and evoke positive feelings. The final result, of course, is meant to be a bittersweet feeling.
