Interview with Michael Cook

Describe your desk
I work in what my wife, Elizabeth, calls "my pod." It's a multi-level computer desk facing a large drawing table. It's in a corner with a big desk chair and closed in by a low bookshelf unit. Everything is within easy reach.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Nashville and grew up in middle Tennessee. I don't necessarily believe where I lived was a factor in my writing but rather how I was raised. I couldn't have asked for a better childhood with parents who I knew loved me and encouraged my creativity. Every child should be so loved.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote some when I was younger but really didn't get into it more until I was in my late 30's as a creative outlet other than illustration or graphic design.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In A FATHER'S DECEPTION, Josh Carothers knows all his father, Jonathan, cares about is his political power and the family name. When Josh makes what he calls ‘a couple of mistakes’, Jonathan won’t let him forget them. The first costs his father millions. The second is when he makes a pass at Isabel Bowman then backhands her when he’s rebuffed.

Five years later, Isabel Bowman has gotten a hard-earned junior partner at a Nashville law firm. To celebrate, she’s shopping at the mall when she begins watching a handsome but embarrassed Navy recruiter at a college fair booth. She decides to ‘save’ him and introduce herself. They have lunch and exchange phone numbers.

Robert Bowman, Isabel’s father, has become a powerful United States senator who’s made a name as a politician who hates the military and the money spent on it. It’s this hate and how he manipulated Josh’s ‘mistake’ with his daughter years earlier that will forever alter the lives of the Carothers, the Bowmans, and Ragan Harris, with the biggest question being who will live or die?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Like a lot of writers, I tried the traditional route but to no avail. My plan was to query several agents but, if none were interested, I would publish electronically so here I am.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creativity and the process. I outline using an index card for each chapter. I lay them out on the dining table, adding, taking away, and combining to get them in the order I want them in. Once that's done, I start writing.

I have my second book outlined and will get started with writing it once I have A Father's Deception on its way.
Who are your favorite authors?
That's an eclectic list. Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, and Scott McEwen as well as Nicholas Sparks and someone I've just discovered, Debbie Macomber.
How do you approach cover design?
As a graphic designer/art director, I designed the cover for A Father's Deception. It went through numerous designs until I settled on the one I used. I'll probably do the same with all my books.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I try to spend as much time as possible with my family. I have two sons. Brandon is 26 and Myka is 9. I try to spend time with each of them as well as my beautiful bride, Elizabeth.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Monday through Friday? Paying the bills. I'm a Graphics Manager for a company in Nashville.

Saturdays are my days to really spend some time writing. I'm at my desk by 7:00 and write until 2:00. Then I spend time with my wife, Elizabeth.

Sundays are church, lunch with the family, then evening service.
