Interview with Jordan Pedersen

How do you approach cover design?
It must reflect the feeling of the story. While writing I generally have a scene that sticks out in my mind as a connecting factor in the story. I then search for the picture or graphic that gives me the same feeling and will hopefully have that same effect on the reader.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing only 2 years ago. I've always had ideas of stories in my mind but sometimes life gets in the way of what you would like to do for a time. My children are grown and have lives of their own now so I have more time to let those stories out and share them with you the reader.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Often my stories deal with loss and how the human spirit deals with it and the effect loss has on the direction of a life afterward. My first book deals with a girl named Grace experiencing the loss of her parents, each in a different way and how it causes her to make decisions for her own life she might not have otherwise made.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Experiencing the characters developement in my mind as I write is exciting for me. Also giving the reader an outcome they might not expect or even want but will leave them affected enough to touch their emotions.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! The purpose or writing is to share an experience you've created with the reader. Knowing people are enjoying the experience makes it all worth while.
What are you working on next?
My next book is also a strong character study with a darker edge than "What If". It follows a psychologist telling the story of the most important patient of his career and life. His use of regretion therapy finds the answers they are searching for but at what cost?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in central Iowa where my first novel is based. My father was the basis for the beginning of the book so I fully understand how events in life can change the direction of your future. That was a pivotal time for me as well as for one of my main characters Grace Weiland. My story "What If" has few similarities to my own life after the initial emotion as my mother was always a wonderful mother who has supported me and my siblings throughout our lives.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords makes getting your novel out for the readers a breeze.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing or working my day job I enjoy anything outdoors. Camping, fishing and biking are big on my list. I really enjoy cooking for family and friends and learning new methods and reciepes. Most of all I love to travel and am up for anything from a short road trip to a week in another state or even country if my finances allow. Spending time with my three year old grandson is a blast also and something I could never get enough of.

Everyone has their own “what if” story. A choice made they’d like to change, words they wished they’d spoken, a person they wished they’d fought for. The one thing you always wonder about even if your life turns out right, and especially if it doesn’t.
