Interview with Michelle Hanson

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was a storyteller before I knew how to write. Graciously, my elementary and high school friends put up with me writing fictional stories about our adventures.
What is your writing process?
My writing process starts with a basic outline of the story. I start with the ending and then work backward from there. Once I get the basics down, I research characters names. Then I usually create a playlist of songs that I think the characters would listen to. I usually don't start writing until I have found the voice for the lead protagonist.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It wasn't the first story I ever read, but the first story that I ever enjoyed was Where the Red Fern Grows.
How do you approach cover design?
I start by researching designs that are from the same genre. From there, it's all trial and error until I can look at the cover and feel good about it.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
Describe your desk
Immaculate.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a big midwestern city. Most of my novels take place in the Midwest too
When did you first start writing?
I have written stories since high school but didn't become an active writer (outside of poetry) until I turned 30.
What's the story behind your latest book?
For now I will describe it as a romantic suspense inspired by Adele's "Hello"
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Telling a great story.
What do your fans mean to you?
I appreciate everyone who has let me try to entertain them.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Helping people.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
directing plays and independent films
