Interview with Michelle Meraki

When did you first start writing?
I first started writing lengthy creative pieces in high school. I started writing the Ertera series when I was 15 years young.
Who are your favorite authors?
My ultimate favourite is C.S. Lewis. I also enjoy Terry Brooks and in a rather unrelated genre Paulo Coelho.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can't recall the very first book I read but I can recall my first fantasy novel. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I was mesmerised by how the tale teleported me to another world where anything was possible. I read it at that stage of my development where everyone expects you to realise that most things are impossible and just conform to their mediocre mindset. So, I guess in a sense it sparked my inner rebel.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The story inside me is too important to risk a traditional publisher turning me down. Sometimes you just know when something is truly special and you have to fight for it. The indie route gives me the greatest chance at success.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is imagining my reader's experience. I often rewrite chapters to provoke a certain response or emotion in the reader. It takes time to craft entertaining and engaging prose, but I get super excited when I imagine how a reader would respond to my words.
What do your fans mean to you?
To fully answer this question I need to elaborate a little on my perspectives.
It takes time to read a book and likewise to craft an excellent manuscript. These days time is a luxury we are not often afforded if we are not intentional about creating space in our schedule. So, for someone to invest time in reading my book is truly a privilege. If readers happen to like my books enough to call themselves fans that to me is truly honouring.
To be able to transport someone into my thoughts by using the written word is something special. People who read my books actually join me on the adventure that unfolds as I capture it all in font. So, my fans are actually so much more to me than just readers or people who purchase my book. They are wild adventurers and definitely people I would consider to be part of my tribe.
What are you working on next?
The next book in the Ertera series, Dark Mountain, is a top priority. I am also writing a novella series focusing on Sharady Blyss and his adventures. I am also brainstorming a new series that focuses on the elves of Alistra.
What is your writing process?
I take time away from the PC and just sit with a pen and paper jotting down ideas around a topic. For my series, I outline the metanarrative and then take about 30minutes to brainstorm around the subplots that would build into the overarching narrative to move the plot in the desired direction. I don't focus too much on chronological order at this stage, I rearrange the ideas into a time-roster at a later stage.
How do you approach cover design?
I have three key things I keep in mind:
1) Less is more
2) Immediate Emotional Connection
3) Keep your promise
A cover should be clean, engage the reader, and make a promise about what they can expect inside the book.
Describe your desk
Organised chaos.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love being outdoors, so when I'm not writing in my author cave I go for walks on the beach or go hiking. I also love bird watching.
