Interview with Michael Smith

why write a book about meditation
Because true happiness comes from within us all. Nothing external such as wealth, fame, power, etc can make us happy, why? because these things in themselves have no ability to create happiness, if they did then everyone who had them would be happy. This is clearly not the case. Therefore happiness must come from our own mind and as we must exercise the body to become fit and healthy so we must exercise the mind to become calm, happy and content. This is why meditation is so important.
Where did you learn meditation
I originally travelled to India in 1980 where I met a young Tibetan. He taught me basic meditation techniques. I then was very fortunate to have met wit His Holiness Dalai Lama who then taught me more about Buddhist philosophy. I have studied meditation since that time. In 2006 I decided to live in India for 6 years where I studied intensely different techniques. I now want to share these techniques with others.
Has meditation helped you personally.
I was trained as a medical scientist, clinical biochemistry to be precise. I was very ambitious and quite impatient and prone to stress. Meditation has helped to calm my mind and although the habits of stressful behaviour are still there I know how to manage them. Stress is a choice and meditation helps to be aware of alternative choices.
Can anyone practice meditation
You do not have to be religious to meditate. Anyone from any faith, or no faith can practice. It is simply a way to train the mind.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Publishing is very difficult in the mainstream. There are many books and publishers want to make money of course. I want to get the message out to people and help them to learn how to meditate. Publishers can't make money from free books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting the message across to people who's lives are stressful. When I give lectures I can almost physically see a light going on in peoples minds when they realise that they have choices, stress, depression, anger, frustration are habitual and like all habits can be broken. Informing people how to make better choices is my greatest joy.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I enjoy my work in medicine its another way to help people and sustains me mentally and of course provides an income so that I can travel. Life is great and people can be wonderful, each day is a joy when you are happy within.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work in a busy pathology unit at a London teaching hospital and I play music and enjoy photography.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote is on Smashwords, its a children's story called Knights of Dreamland.
What do you read for pleasure?
I tend to read Buddhist philosophy because I learn every time I read something new or even something I have read over and over. Each time you get a deeper understanding which can be brought into every day life.
When did you first start writing?
I first began serious writing in 1992 with poetry, then children stories and some comedy.
