Interview with Nia Arthurs

How do you approach cover design?
I approach cover design with an eye for details. I want my covers to stand out without looking bombastic. I also want the colors to reflect the general theme of the book. If it's a fantasy, the colors may be more whimsical, while if it's a romance, I'll go with strong, passionate colors.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story that I ever read was "The Gingerbread Man". My father sat me on his lap and taught me to read before anyone thought a two year old was capable of such a thing. He taught me to look at words like pictures. I had no idea what the individual letters were as yet, but I knew when I saw the picture with the squiggles that word was "THE".
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favorite books are romance novels. I love, love, love Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and I find a way to incorporate many of her characters or themes or even mention her book in my stories.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read romance novels for pleasure. I don't like smarmy details or too much information when it comes to the bedroom. I respect an author that can titillate the mind without being graphic.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
A Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm still trying to figure it all out. So far, I've started a blog and created a Twitter and Instagram. We'll see how that helps.
Describe your desk
My desk is cluttered with newspapers, an old computer monitor that no one has used since 1999, a harp, lotion and books.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Belize. This influenced my writing because I love to showcase my culture and describe the beautiful settings of my homeland in my novels.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was thirteen years old. As a #bookie, my parents would punish me by taking away my Kindle and restricting me from reading. That summer, they told me that I couldn't read for two weeks. My only literature for the next fourteen days would have to be the Bible. As much as I love God, I wasn't into reading nothing but the Bible, so I picked up a pen and a notebook and wrote my own stories.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to try something new and different. My forte is romance novels, however, I don't like to be stuck in a box. I wanted to try my hand at all genres and so "Scarlet" was born.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I believe in the power of the indie author because as a young girl surfing the web for free reads, I knew that the indie author had power. I write for all the young people who don't have credit cards or big bank accounts to purchase books but love stories with a passion. I ensure that my prices are low and feasible so that everyone can enjoy a good book.
