Interview with Miranda Grant

Describe your desk
Glass and constantly doused by water. I have to write quickly before the words disappear under the spray of the shower, but the hot steam allows some great thinking so maybe I'll just get some waterproof markers...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
We moved a lot as a kid; the first time was hard, but then I learned to just befriend the characters of books. These I could take with me and they never let me down, opening up a world of marvellous detail and relationships that I fell into every chance I got.

Now I get to write those stories and that is the greatest honor. I hope to be someone's escape in turn.
When did you first start writing?
As soon as I could pick up a pen. I used to make these tiny children books about three inches across when I was in kindergarten and thought I was going to publish one of them some day. Unfortunately, they all got lost in a move, so I'll just have to make some new ones.
What's the story behind your latest book?
For Rogan the mission always came first...until he met her.

Elemental Claim is the first book in a series where the main protagonists are trying to stop a sadistic vampire named Sebastian from destroying the Seven Planes in his wild attempt for power. Rogan is the leader of the Elv've'Norc team tasked with spearheading this mission, but due to some bad intel, he accidentally kidnaps the wrong person - someone who has no idea that the world of the Myth even exists...despite being one of them. Unable to let her go, first because of what she is and the danger she can become, then later because of his growing feelings for her, Rogan is forced to decide if his future with her is worth the lives of millions.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was recently let go for mentioning that I wasn't being paid minimum wage. Instead of falling in a pit of despair at being unable to find another job, I escaped once more into the world of fiction - except for this time it was a world of my creating. I was determined to make the most of the free time I now had, so for the next month and a half I wrote from anywhere between three to twelve hours a day. And eventually all that hard work and dedication paid off and I self-published my first book (Elemental Claim) right before Christmas.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Breakfast.
How do you approach cover design?
With madness, confusion, and sheer frustration. Just look at the crap I made via Pexels and Youtube.
