Interview with Pearl O'Leslie

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most effective way to reach people has been my blog (http://www.omisspearl.com), where I offer regularly updated writing including my popular free femdom stories. With so much amateur content, people need to know how good you are.
Describe your desk
I don't usually write in any one set place. I'm more likely to be curled up in bed, or with my feet up on the coffee table in the living room. I find I think better when I'm comfortable and besides, I'm a very fidgety person and being at a rigid, proper desk makes that worse.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing as long as I've been literate. It's a normal activity in my family (although I'm the person who has had the most successful career to date, but hey, I'm rooting for them!) and it's a natural extension of reading. What really helped train me was online text RPGs. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I hated having typos and grammar mistakes, so it really kicked the quality of my writing into over drive to be writing pages and pages of a fantasy fiction every evening with friends.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"The Pet Gentleman" was something I started working on as I was exploring my identity as a femdom. There's not much out there for women, although it has gotten better, and what there was that I could find, was about living a very male submissive fantasy. So I wrote something dark and heavy, and as unapologetic as the heroine.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Trying to get BDSM porn (I mean erotica) published is an uphill battle. I realized that i could do it as efficiently and well as any publishing house could and make more money doing it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Frankly you guys are the motivation for sharing. If it weren't for your appreciation this would never leave my personal computer. I love getting fan messages and finding out when I touched someone is a powerful feeling.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on "Understanding a Cruel Lady", the sequel to "The Pet Gentleman".
Who are your favorite authors?
Tanith Lee and Terry Pratchett probably top the list as biggest influences on me, the former for her lurid and lush prose and imagination, and the latter for his joy and wit. Honestly I also read a lot of historical romance, as I really appreciate when the author handles the formula well.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I actually like waking up. I'm a morning person, and do my best work before 10 AM. A good cup of tea helps, though.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm an organizer by nature- in the BDSM community, and in my nerdy hobbies. I'm always running things, holding parties, planning meetups, and booking myself solid. Oddly, I'm not an extrovert, but i relate to people best when I'm busy.
