Interview with Jane Benson

How do you approach cover design?
For my book, How to Succeed at Work Without Really Crying, I wanted to use a photo of my young self. Many young people are still a blank slate, wide open to new experiences, full of wonderful life dreams, and believe that the world is their oyster. The modern workplace has become a spirit crusher for too many people, and that's just wrong.
What are your five favorite books?
The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin by H. W. Brands
Anything by Stephen Colbert--one of the most important satirical voices of our day.
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Describe your desk
The biggest mess you've ever seen. But I know where everything is, so don't touch it!
What's the story behind your latest book?
American workers need and deserve more security and respect from their employers.

Dark chocolate has many health benefits, but how about dark humor? And speaking of health benefits, American workers are getting the shaft in terms of pay and health benefits. This dark little comedy is just what the doctor ordered. Dedicated to workers who bravely trudge on despite mistreatment, low wages, downgraded benefits, no benefits, and layoffs. A living rage has replaced the living wage.
