Interview with P Mothupi

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Tubatse and grew up in Tafelkop ga Matsepe and inspired by the late O.K Matsepe.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was still at school. I published my first book titled Ke Wena in 1996.
What motivated you to become an author?
I was motivated by reading some of the books written by the late Mr M.J Madiba.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote? What was it about?
The first story I wrote was Ke Wena. It is about cheating.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing just for fun. Also, Lehufa was prescribed for Grade 12 Literature from 2009 until now and one of my books titled Ga le batswadi ba selo won the 2014 Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards. It has also been prescribed for Grade 12 as a First Additional Language as of January 2017.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Ga a mo swanela and it gave me courage to write.
What are your five favourite books?
Ga a mo swanela, Lenong la gauta, Bogobe bja tswitswii, Motseng wa Dimakatso and Rena magomotsa.
What do you read for pleasure?
The newspaper.
What do your readers mean to you?
They mean a lot. Some of them keep encouraging me by phone and Facebook.
