Interview with Ms Jennifer Pink

When did you first start writing?
I've always written great stories and essays for school, but it wasn't until my 30s that I began to write professionally through my blog, articles in magazines, and eventually my books.
What's the story behind your latest book or series of books?
"My Fight With God" is the book I NEVER wanted to write. Right after my purpose of being a single mom mentor became clear, God whispered in my ear, "Write a book for the women just like you." Admittedly, I thought God was CRAZY! I thought, "No one wants to read about the ups and downs of my life. No one cares about my struggles and battles with Him." I guess God knew better than me! The freedom I found since releasing "My Fight With God" has been the most rewarding experience ever - not to mention the unlocking of my next dimension in Him.
What motivated you to become a published author?
Simply put: everyone else! Everyone was asking me to write a book. Everyone wanted me to put my sage down in a book. Everyone declaring that "this picture" or "that picture" was book-cover ready.

And, of course... God's constant whispers.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me, it's the joy of being able to put all of my emotions, thoughts, lessons, and ultimately sage onto the paper so that 100 years from now, women can STILL grow through what they go through and STILL THRIVE because of it.
What do your fans/followers mean to you?
The things I do are done for my kids and for my following. I am committed to being a change agent for them. I write, speak, and mentor because I want them to embark upon change and truly begin to THRIVE.
What are you working on next?
There are several book projects I am slated to be a part of, but for me PERSONALLY, I can't figure out if what's next is parenting as a single mom or my single mom love story. I guess God will show me which one to put on paper when I'm ready!
Who are some of your favorite authors?
When it comes to what I love to read, I love steamy, hot, and sexy drama romance books. As such, I love Eric Jerome Dickey, Terry McMillan, Zane, and the late E. Lynn Harris. I also love to read books that impact change in my life. Most notably, that would be "Boss Women Pray" by Kachelle Kelly.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that there is a single mother out there who needs me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your "free" time?
"Free" time? What's that?

When I'm not raising my three little people, mentoring single moms, speaking running my empire, or writing books, I'm trying to cuddle, eat, and sleep all at the same time!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote? If so, what was it titled and what was it about?
The first story (if you want to call it a story) I ever wrote was my own obituary. It was for a speech class in college. We were instructed to write out our own obituaries - and in true Jennifer fashion, I didn't write the basic "born, worked, marriage, kids, and died" obituary. I created this STORY with several characters, an intriguing plot, and gave all of me in it. The teacher said, "I'm not sure you can call that an obituary, but I CERTAINLY know who you are!"
What is your writing process?
I don't focus on writing. I don't think about it at all. I usually start with the theme that I have to get out. Then, I come up with the themes within THAT theme to get my real point across. Then, I STOP. I go about my days doing whatever I have to do and wait. I wait until something STOPS me. The moment I am stopped, I get to my computer and start going. I can't STOP until I've gotten it all out. It usually takes three to four hours. When I'm done, there's a chapter! Sometimes, it will be back-to-back days. Sometimes, it will take months for the next BIG STOP to come.

I have tried to force the process or do it differently, but I can never seem to get one complete thought out. I have even tried to write when I have a piece of the idea or a little bit of something GREAT, but again, I can't get more than two sentences out. Hence, I've learned I have to wait until the moment GOD opens my eyes, heart, and soul. I wait until He's ready for me to release every single piece of sage He has given me to share.
Do you remember the first story you ever read? If so, what impact did it have on who you are today as an author?
I don't remember the first, but I do remember the first time I realized books and words had the power to transform my whole life.

It was when I read, "The Sisters of APF" (this was before I became a Christian). While reading it, I felt like I was one of the women in the book. I honestly felt everything the pages said. That was the moment I knew the power words had in my life. Then, when I read Kachelle Kelly's "BOSS Women Pray", I realized I could use the power of my greatness and my sage to bring about change in others. That was when I knew it was time for me to become an author.
Describe your desk or preferred writing atmosphere.
All of my spaces are filled with PINK things. My desk is no different. In all honesty, all I need is for my spirit to be ready and a computer. When it's time for me to write, I can write amidst a million questions and distractions because I become so focused, I literally can't see or hear anything else other than what my spirit is saying.
How did where you grew up influence your writing?
I believe the fact that I grew up in a middle-class world where I spent a lot of my educational years in a rich society but came home to middle-class while living around the corner from the poor influenced me to see, say, and write things from all of those perspectives at the same time. I go back and forth from educated to "ghetto", from wealthy to poor when I write.
Do you prefer eBooks or print? Why?
I love the convenience of eBooks, but I have learned the only time I really get into books is when I can flip and bend the pages - and mark up the book.
How would you describe your individual writing style?
My writing style is authentic and extremely transparent. I don't know how to write without telling ALL of my business and talking to my reader as if we are having a real conversation as true friends. I look at my books as a way for me to build relationships with more women than I could actually ever meet in this lifetime, so I make sure to give them the real, uncensored, and raw Jennifer Pink. My editor edits me sometimes, but most of the time she lets my crazy shine right on through!
