Interview with Mubanga Mwanza

How did you become a smashwords author
Well I've always loved to tell stories, in my younger days I
made comic books(something I hope to soon pursue). Then I channelled my creativity into being a rapper( who growing up in the early 90's didn't want to be a rapper who also played in the Nba) but neither my rap career nor my non dunking basketball skills lead me to success . I remember my English teacher or teacher of English (hope that's grammaticaly correct enough for you Mr Ako Ado) would always be on my case about my hand writing or a missing comma but my interest was always to make my essays interesting. Anyway that's a bit of the history fastfoward( for the younger generation it's something we did with audio tapes ask your parents) year's later my niece ask's me to write her a story and the Mimi character is born overnight. I wanted to print the book for her but my printer ran out of ink so I figured I would sell a few copies and buy the ink. I haven't been able to shake the writing bug ever since.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Wow tough one, best way I can sum it up is potential. If you haven't found that special someone today could be the day. If you haven't written the great novel today could be the day. You could change the world or win the lottery today,a fresh twenty four has so much potential.
What is your writing process?
Well I wisj there was a more structured process but it's very much writing from the seat of my pants so to speak. The blue winged fairy books I just sat down and wrote the story as it came to me while for The kalale chronicles :Omega protocol I had a rough idea of the story created the characters and took it from there.
What are you working on next?
Well I finished the first in an action adventure series called The Kalale chronicles : Omega Protocol which should soon be available in the smashwords store. I must add that this book is one that I'm really excited about because I wrote The blue winged fairy books for my niece this book I wrote for me. Action adventure with a sprinkling of sci-fi, had so much fun writing it. I will get started on the follow up and possibly new improved versions of the blue winged fairy books once I am done with some graphic novels I've just started working on
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My first book to have an impact on me was not so much a conventional book but was comic books with X-men being something that caught my imagination. I also remember reading a novel about frankenstein and I won't lie I shed a few tears at the end.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Honestly this is a question I'm still exploring. I'm not what you may call a people person but I suppose finding a way for people to know who you are and what you are about. I'll be sure to let you know when and if my book becomes wildly successful.
Describe your desk
This for me is the easiest question to answer because...drum roll please... I don't have a desk everything I've written has been done sitting on my bed on whatever paper I can gety hands on before being transferred to my little laptop.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I have my whole life in Zambia where I was born and growing up I wasn't exposed to too many books and didn't take literature in secondary school, generally there was a very poor reading culture at the time. The only exciting books around were comic books which were never consistantly available you could get an issue number four then the next time you would get the same title it would be issue eleven and you would have to use you're wits to figure out the storyline this I feel helped shape my imagination.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing comic books over fifteen years ago rap songs over ten years ago but books I've just started and dived head first into this. It should be a fun journey hopefully we'll laugh, cry, scream and grow together.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's an action adventure with a group of young friends who end up fighting for the lives as a sinister vilian tries to murder them as part of a wider plot to bring down the president. It also discreetly coments on the widening gap between the classes that make up society. There's a sentient drone entertaining characters, humour and the best NON zombie /vampire /werewolf/wizard action you'll read
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a tone of stories to tell amd despite the lack of foal training indie publishing gave me an incredible outlet to reach the world. I honestly don't know if I'm the best writer but I know I'm a talented storyteller.
