Interview with Deborah Guddee

What is EFT?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, sometimes called 'that tapping thing'. It works in a similar way to acupressure or acupuncture, except you use your fingers to lightly tap on certain parts of the face and body, and there are no needles involved whatsoever.

It is often called 'an emotional version of acupuncture but without the needles'
How does EFT (tapping) work?
Our body is electrical by nature, machines in hospitals register this with ECG's etc.. When we feel a negative emotion our body's electrical circuit goes 'out of balance', tapping sends tiny electrical impulses through the body to put it back in balance.

So by thinking about and focusing on the negative feeling and tapping on the points at the same time, as instructed, the negative feelings will go away and be replaced by a natural state of acceptance.

EFT is one of the few things you really do not have to believe in for it to work.
Why did you write this book and why bullying
Being seriously bullied myself from ages 11 to 16 and then being bullied and sexually harassed in the workplace, I know what this feels like and want others to know that there is emotional help and support out there that actually works.

Having been trained in EFT and Matrix Reimprinting (an advanced form of EFT) and being a trainer myself for many years, I know how quickly and easily EFT tapping works.

I also believe that if children can overcome emotional issues at an early age adulthood will be that much better.

I am also working on releasing books dealing with other emotions such as Anxiety and Anger.
Is this about anti-bullying or bully prevention?
Neither. This book is a new way of approaching bullying by working with the emotions. There are some amazing anti-bullying and bully prevention books on the market, but what happens when the child is at home and they receive a text message or email, or when they are laying in their bed and can't get to sleep for all the thoughts in their head?

This is where my book comes into it's own as the child can use EFT to help themselves feel better, then and there. They do not need to confront anyone, and no-one need know about it.

The child can also tap while in school with their hands under the desk, it is a very powerful tool that can have immediate results.
How can EFT help with bullying
While thinking about and feeling how you feel (or felt) about being bullied and tapping on the points as instructed at the same time, it will naturally change the negative feeling to a more positive one.

EFT helps to put things into perspective, naturally, so what someone may have said or done to you will no longer matter and you may feel a new sense of confidence or self-esteem, which may mean that the bullying will stop altogether as you will not respond to the taunts of the bully.
How long does EFT last
Once you no longer have any negative emotion about a specific aspect, EFT is usually permanent, which means that you will not have to tap for that aspect again.

As an example, let's imagine that someone called you a specific nasty name and you think about how that feels and you tap at the same time, after a while (approximately 15 minutes) it is likely that hearing that name won't bother you at all.

When you get to the stage where you can think about that nasty name and you really don't care about it, then it is likely to have permanently cleared.
Who is this book for?
This book is aimed at ages 7 to 12 (approximately) mostly due to the short story, however, teenagers could use the tap along guides in this book also and in particular they could benefit from the list of suggested words and phrases and blank tapping guide to help them put their feelings into their own words.

If you as an adult were bullied, you may also be able to relate to some of the wording in this book. Although written for this age range, it would do no-harm to try the exercises for yourself.

A version is being written for younger children.
Why did you choose this cover design
This was a very challenging process and I had over 100 designs to choose from. After getting the views and opinions of friends, family, professionals in the industry and social media feedback, I decided not to have a picture of a child on the cover. I also decided to show a positive image as I feel there are too many negative images about bullying out there, and this is a very positive book.

The dandelion is also known as 'make a wish' and children are often wishing that the bullying will stop. The dandelion is also blowing off the page and each new seed can plant a new dandelion which signifies new beginnings.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I come from a large family of 10 children where I am the youngest, we had little money but made the best out of things. I went to a standard school and grew up in a fairly rough area.

This has made me very down to earth with little 'fluff' about me with the 'if you don't ask you don't get' type of attitude.

I am known for being quite direct with my words, hence you will find this book speaks a little more near the truth with the tapping guides than many other similar style books.
When did you first start writing?
I have always written, this was my release as a child, I would come home from school and write how I felt about the day and everything else. I wrote numerous stories and many poems. However, I never told anyone about my writing, I kept it all to myself for many, many years, probably for fear of ridicule or being judged.

When I did start telling people I started to get good feedback and had two poems published in a local poetry anthology. My daughter and I also wrote a book early last year called My Favorite Hugs which won an Indie award for being one of 12 most notable children's books of 2013 by Shelf Unbound.
What are you working on next?
Now that I have started writing again the ideas are flooding through. My next book will focus on Discover the Magic of EFT for Anxiety. My daughter and I are also half way through our next book called My Favorite Smiles and I have other titles I have penned for future writing.

if you don't know me now, hopefully you will discover some of my work in the next few years and enjoy my simplistic easy to read style as much as I enjoy writing it.

A very deep 'thank you' for taking the time to get to know me a little.
