Interview with Rico Larsen

When did you first start writing?
I have inherited a rather creative mind from my father and so, i have always drawn and painted. I have written a couple of short stories in school but nothing major. With regards to serious writing, that came about later in life. I was deployed on my fourth tour of duty with the Danish Army and needed a getaway. I found that putting pen to paper while dreaming of times long ago, helped me relax. Once i started the whole thing just took over and i havn't stopped.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Ruric is a work of fiction set against the backdrop of actual historical events. A story of a split Kingdom on the brink of civil war. Our leading man returns from the crusades and ends up playing a vital role in the establishment of what would become the Danish Empire. I don't want to give too much away, you will have to read it for yourself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to dream about people who lived so many years ago. Get an inside look into their lives and have the power to drive them in any direction i want. I love being able to escape the mondane reality of everyday life and produce something that i can be proud of.
What do your fans mean to you?
When i have some i will tell you. The possibility that people may want to read the book which literally took me years to complete is in its own right a huge accomplishment for me.
Who are your favorite authors?
Harry Turtledove, Jan Guillou, Susanne Clod Pedersen, Dan Brown of course and many, many more. I have a love for Historical fiction and sci/fi.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Being new at this game i have followed Smashwords advice. facebook, Twitter and good old fashioned word of mouth. Now i wait to see if any of it actually works.
Describe your desk
A mess of paper, drawings, scribbled notes and half finished manuscripts. Coffee stains and a bin full of "revised" ideas.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in the beautiful fairytale land of Denmark. I moved to not so sunny England around my fifth birtyday and spent the next thirteen years living in old Blighty. growing up in England was at times a test. I had to learn early in life that i had to stand tall in order not to be trodden on, which i frequently was anyway. Whether or not my writing has been influenced by my upbringing, i don't really know. People have said that they can see me in some of my characters so i guess it has to some extent. I find that i usually write from experiences gained later in life. I have spent fifteen years in the Army which undoubtably influences me.
How do you approach cover design?
I draw. Once i have a clear idea in my head i break out Photoshop, brew a large pot of coffee and stay up all night.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything that has to do with sci/fi or medieval times. Action and adventure are also favourites.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I haven't actually got a device of my own. My wife has a Kindle which i borrow but mainly i view everything on my pc.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me a platform from which i hope to reach a large audience. Success for me is just having anybody actually read my work.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
A paycheck. Got to pay those pesky bills. Other than that i just enjoy the small ammount of time i have on this planet.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Work, work and more work.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I look on Smashwords of course.
What are you working on next?
Bjorn's Saga.. A Viking saga set at the end of the Viking era.
Published 2015-02-25.
