Interview with Nada Shahwan

When did you first start writing?
I started writing at a very young age. I think I was seven or maybe eight years old.
What is your writing process?
I need to be alone while writing with a cup of coffee on my desk, otherwise I can't focus! When I'm writing a novel, I tend to write short portions from time to time whenever I get ideas, and during the days in which my brain lacks energy to come up with new ideas, I just keep revising and fixing what I have already written.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
it enables me to make a difference in my society!
Describe your desk
my desk is always messy! you will find on it two or three empty coffee cups, colored pencils, an Incomplete drawing on a paper from my notebook, a few books and of course my laptop.
What do you read for pleasure?
novels.
Who are your favorite authors?
Lisa See, Saud Alsanousi and Danielle Steel.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1- Snow Flower and the Secret fan/ Lisa See
2- Shanghai Girls/ Lisa See
These two novels revolve around the life of women and their struggles and sacrifices. It's a topic that I'm interested in and that's why I like these two books.
3- Please Stop Laughing at me/ Jodee Blanco
I like this book because it's inspiring and it could be of help to the students who are going through the same struggle as the writer.
4- The Bamboo Stalk/ Saud Alsanousi
I like this novel because it discusses some of the problems in Arabic societies, such as racism and being controlled by the fear of people's judgement.
5- Please Look After Mom/ Kyung-Sook Shin
This novel makes me think of my mom, Understand her and appreciate her more and more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
it differs everyday!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
not really! I started writing short stories at the age of seven or maybe eight. I wrote a lot and I was so young,so I can't really remember!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
watching drama, drawing and coloring, having fun with my family, reading a novel or simply using my phone.
