Interview with Bwire wa Bwire

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I am yet to see. My book My Son, My Heir has just passed the Premium account approval and been sent to book stores. I am also implementing the Smashwords Marketing Guidelines to get my prospective readers to know more about my book and myself.
What do your fans mean to you?
A lot. Because they will contribute to my writing success. Without fans an author, a musician or any artist of any calling is nothing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I have enjoyed reading novels all my life and always thought of writing a book or books myself when I got the time. There is joy in creating something from nothing. And that why a mother loves her child or children - they grow in her stomach from "nothing" to being given birth to. She nurtures them through time to whatever they become as adults. And this explains the love for her daughters's well being that led to my main character Wanja, switch the babies.
What are you working on next?
I am still thinking about that, but definitely I am going to write another book and publish through Smashwords. It may be another novel or any other literally book.
Who are your favorite authors?
They are so many. I have read most of the 100 Best Novels. Outstanding among these are:
1. George Orwell
2. Aldous Huxley
3. James Baldwin
4. William Golding - Lord of Flies which I read as a set literature in high school
5. Joseph Konrad
6. John Steinbeck
7. Arthur Koestler
8. Dashiell Hammett
9. The Bronte sisters
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Because I am alive and able to do so. Imagine a time when one is not able to get out of bed. This scares me me and I jump out of bed every morning, do my routine exercises, shave and take a shower and begin my day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am still a Business Consultant and still have quite a number of assignments from my clients. When I am relaxing, I tremendously enjoy music, mainly country, jazz, classic and classical. I watch a lot of movies, mainly action. I also occasionally hangout with friends having a drink or two. I also watch TV international channels like CNN, BBC, Al Jazzera and Fox News.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
This is the one. I had only written short essays in school.
What is your writing process?
My process begins with the conception of the idea. Like in this case the idea was triggered by my friend's reactions to his wife's continued bearing daughters and the way he was excited when she at last gave birth to a baby boy. After conceiving the idea, I begin planning the tentative details of the book, which of course keep changing. These details include creating characters, assigning the characters roles and their characteristics, thinking out the chapters of the book and so on,
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
This must have been a children's illustrated story when I was very young. It led to my interest in reading more of these and eventually adult novels. When I was young, when reading a novel I would be completely engrossed in it such that my friends would come and next for several minutes - may be up to ten - without my noticing their presence. That is how my first stories impacted on me.
How do you approach cover design?
I use a professional designer. But I explain to the designer what I want my cover to portray. In the case of My Son, My Heir, I told the designer that I wanted a young boy to represent the son whom Kimani thought he had at last got.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read mainly fiction for pleasure. But I also read other serious material including business and management books, magazines, articles and so on. I also read political material, especially international type.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Laptop and smart phone
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am just beginning to publish. As I said earlier, I am implementing Smashwords' Marketing Guide. I am putting my author link to my social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. I will be implementing other recommended techniques as I go on.
Describe your desk
I don't work on a desk most of the time. I only have my laptop on my lap and there I am going. But desk is very clean. There are hardly any paper on it as I work mainly on my computer.
