Interview with Nancy J. Cohen

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
When I have a new release coming out, I plan a promotional campaign ahead of time. This includes sending out advance review copies, a newsletter blast, contests, blog tours, ads, and an active social media presence. I'll do a Facebook launch party on release day. Cross-promotion with other authors helps as well.
Describe your desk
I love my desk that covers a corner with my computer in the center, and two consoles on either side. Knickknacks related to my books or writing adorn the shelves along with numerous books and notebooks.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was in graduate school for nursing. That's when I learned how to write a novel. I wrote six books before I sold my first work. That was Circle of Light, a futuristic romance, that went on to win the HOLT Medallion.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My next book will be the Haunted Hair Nights novella, book 12.5 in the Bad Hair Day mysteries. I've never written a Halloween story, so when I was invited to participate in a Fall anthology, this seemed a natural theme. I'll be bringing out my own editions in October 2016.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I want more control over my release dates and royalties. I'll be working with editorial same as at a publishing house, but now I can determine when my books will be released along with the pricing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords allows for a wider distribution than I could do for myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Reader feedback is the best part of being a writer. I keep going because fans want the next book in my series. There's nothing more gratifying than a letter from a reader raving about my story.
