Interview with Nancy Morse

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy working out at the gym, dining out, watching old movies on TV, walking and playing with the dog, going to art and antique shows.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have many author friends with whom I am in constant contact. From them I find out about their new releases and also what they're reading.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote for publication was a tale of love and lust. I don't recall the publication I submitted it to, but it might have been one like True Confessions. They didn't buy it, and it's just as well because it wasn't very good. Prior to that I was always writing stories for my own amusement.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on a Kindle.
What is your writing process?
Being fairly disciplined, I start writing in the morning and just keep going through the day until I run out of steam. That doesn't mean I don't come up against the dreaded writer's block. I do. I usually have 2 projects going at once, so that if I run into a block on one, I can switch to the other. And then, sometimes life gets in the way. When tragedy strikes or life just lays me low, I give myself permission to not write. As for the process itself, I start at the beginning of the book and work through it.
How do you approach cover design?
I like my cover to depict the character or characters in the story, with the background that is appropriate to the time and place. I tell my cover designer what the story is about, when it takes place, who the characters are, and what I'd like to see. Often, I will give her images I like. Then she works her magic.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I don't do a lot of paid advertising. Mostly, I share on Facebook and tweet. When I have a new release, I ask my fellow authors and friends to tweet it to their followers. I'm fortunate to have a fairly good-sized following of readers who scoop up my new releases.
Describe your desk
Monitor, keyboard, printer, file trays, scanner, telephone, and books all over the desk, usually the ones I'm using for research on my current book. I try to keep things neat. Sadly, I don't always succeed.
When did you first start writing?
At the age of 9, I entered a 25-word-or-less contest on why I like Rin Tin Tin. I won. Around that time I also started my own newspaper The Voodoo Express. I finally put the paper to rest when my family begged me to stop inundating them with issues.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is Book 3 in my Native American Wild Wind Series that follows the love and adventures of trader's daughter, Katie McCabe, and Lakota warrior Black Moon. In Book 3 RESTLESS WIND, the ever-increasing hostilities between the Sioux and the Army in 1866 plant seeds of doubt in Katie's mind as to which world she belongs - the white world into which she was born, or Black Moon's Lakota world in which she has chosen to live. As Black Moon rides with Crazy Horse to rid the Powder River country of the Long Knives, Katie joins a wagon train and embarks on a journey of self-discovery, setting into motion events as turbulent as the restless wind.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After many years of being traditionally published by Pocket Books, Dell, Meteor, Silhouette and Harlequin, the last few manuscripts I submitted were rejected, so I decided to publish them independently. I'm so glad I did because they have become some of my best-selling books. I'm not a control freak by nature, but I do like having control over my work from cover design to pricing. It's liberating.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords gave me the outlet to publish independently and increase my sales. I taught myself to format my books with the help of the Smashwords Guide, and now I format as I write.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Many people think if they write a book and it doesn't sell, they have failed. I write a book solely for myself. In this way, whether it sells or not I have accomplished something and that makes me a success. I write the kinds of stories I like to read, stories that take me to places I've never been.
What do your fans mean to you?
Are you kidding? They mean everything. Even though I write to please myself, I always have them in the back of my mind, and if what I write pleases them also, then I have truly succeeded.
What are you working on next?
A 4 part western historical novella series about 4 brothers in Texas in the early-mid 1800's
What do you read for pleasure?
Since I write mostly historical novels, I actually enjoy reading historical research materials.
