Interview with Nanette Caran

What do you read for pleasure?
I've read the King James Bible 8 times front to back, which is the most times I've ever read a book. Philippa Gregory "The Other Boleyn Girl", Georgia Pellegrini "Girl Hunter" and Fiona Carnarvon "Lady Almina and the Real Lady Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle. Alot of Texas history as well.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Mac computer. The older I get the more I need to have larger screens to read.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Hum, I guess my marketing techniques are to write the most compelling story and let the readers decide. I know everyone is using their social media as a platform book sales. But you still need to be a great writer with a great story first.
Describe your desk
Depends, I have 3. A desk for personal stuff, an area for business and a place I write.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest has greatly influenced my writing. The outdoors have played a factor in the stories I tell.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first novel, a romance, when I was 12 and stored it in a box. Now if only I could find that box...
What's the story behind your latest book?
A true story of God and how even being a backslider answered my prayers. Yet, when given my heart's desire I still didn't keep my promises to God. Big mistake.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
In one word: control.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
This is my first novel with Smashwords and hope it's a big success!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Leaving a piece of me behind forever.
What do your fans mean to you?
People who love my writing are kindred souls. We connect on a very personal level. I feed off their approval.
What are you working on next?
Another non-fiction of raising boys to men.
Who are your favorite authors?
Already answered.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My children, my husband and God. Not in that order.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Relaxing by reading, swimming, walking and travel.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My kids!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes it was a romance novel when I was young and it was about a woman pirate.
What is your writing process?
Write as much as possible when the words flow and don't stop until they do.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The story my young son wrote about our family. It moved me.
How do you approach cover design?
Let a professional handle it!
