Interview with Nathaniel Durham

Published 2017-12-14.
Describe your desk
Kind of haphazard at times, due to heavy work with electronics,. During my chemistry experiments, I make sure that my desk is clean. It isn't really a desk, but a table that once, belonged to a judge. This table was purchased by my grandfather, who was a defense attorney while he was still alive. My grandfather kept this table is a room in his office, where he kept his law books. The same room was once, occupied by an attorney named Chuck Greenacre, who is now a judge. On it, right now, are some science books, electrical apparatus, except for a flask and also, my grandmother's old radio from the 1940's and my great grandmothers's old phonograph player from about the turn of the century and it still plays.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in Montrose, Colorado and this is where I currently live. I have always had scientific interests in the physical world and asked my first scientific questions at the age of 3 and a half. However, I had an interest in lights at 1 and a half, earliest recorded. However, until I was 7 years old, I was considered to be mentally disabled, but was tested and this was proved to be wrong. So, I switched schools and my favorite teacher taught me to read in the second grade. I started out writing somewhat iconoclastic stories, but that turned into scientific writings at the age of 15, which were all theoretical and this was in high school. In between those ages, I was reading college texts and experiment books on and with electricity, electronics and chemistry and at 16, took up a strong interest in theoretical and classical physics. This all could not have happened without Mrs. Barbara Fogg giving me things to take apart, or my father and the rest of the family, equally. In fact, without my family and without good teachers and without the support of the rest of who I have as support, none of this could have happened. I wrote my first book in 2004.
When did you first start writing?
As a sophomore, in high school. 1995 - 1996.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have always wanted to solve my deepest questions about existence and I have always felt the need to contribute my scientific work to humanity and so that humanity might have a deeper understanding of the world around them. Also, this might lead to a cleaner, safer world as well and somehow, in other ways, keep humanity alive, along with all life, period by new findings and developments that come from these findings.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Relaxation by getting away from my stresses while contributing to human understanding.
What are you working on next?
I am thinking about writing a book of experiments with electricity and electronics.
Who are your favorite authors?
David MacCaulay, Virginia Mullin, Brian Greene, Carl Eagan and Stephen Hawking.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Science experiments, time with my father, partying, walking, time with my pets, using my slingshot, spending time with friends, helping out my father... A lot of things, including thinking.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I look them up by subject.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, but it is age inappropfiate, right now.
How do you approach cover design?
I take pictures of the best thing that I can.
What do you read for pleasure?
Science books and encyclopedias.
What do your fans mean to you?
The more that they are true fans and not haters, then I have therefore, contributed to their understanding.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
A tablet. I use the pub reader from Google Play to read most epubs.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Being a skillful and knowledgeable writer in my fields of study.
What is your writing process?
I think very carefully and focus on my concepts, carefully advancing them. Once that I think that it is time to publish the idea, I publish it. A cup of coffee or something just might help. It is what sparks my imagination that inspires me to write and this is a question.
