Interview with Nathalie Emanuels

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I work as a support teacher in an international school. My days are quite long as I also give private English classes. Writing is something that comes when most other things are done and dealed with. I do like to read, there are two big books from Spanish writers on my bedside table waiting for me and every so often I go to the gym.
Sounds quite boring... I know.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I google lists of best books to read in different years. When I'm in Ireland or Holland, I go to bookshops to browse, however now I live in Spain and my Spanish is not sufficient enough to read full length novels, I can understand the novellas on television though, so I don't go to bookshops here.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a poem called 'When you are in bath at night, you think about everything.' I wrote in on that brown thin notebook paper that you can't buy anymore now. I was quite pleased with myself and showed it in the car to my mom when we were coming home from a family visit. I don't think she was really impressed.
What is your writing process?
It starts with a dream. Every so often I have a very detailed dream, which I have to write down immediately. The story gets built around it. When I start a new book, I just set myself a goal of 400 words a day. That is advice, I read many years ago and it absolutely works. Depending if it's a young adult book, I continue until I have around 50.000 words or for a novel 80.000 words. When I'm finished with the first draft, I leave it for a few weeks and go over it again. That process repeats itself a few times. I always end up changing the order of the chapters.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
'Kruistocht in spijker broek' was maybe not the first story but definitely the one that always stayed with me. I read it in primary school and most have been about 10 or 11. See below. I thought it was amazing. I also read the Famous Five.
I read quite a lot and quite fast as a child. I sometimes went to the library twice a day. Years later when I spoke to the librarians in my local library when I went in for a reading, they mentioned that I messed up their systems by checking books in and out so fast.

Crusade in Jeans - Wikipedia
Crusade in Jeans (1973) is a children's novel written by Thea Beckman. It contains a fictional account of the children's crusade of 1212, as witnessed by Rudolf Hefting, a boy from the 20th century. The original Dutch title is Kruistocht in spijkerbroek. A film version was released in 2006..
How do you approach cover design?
I don't do it myself. I don't have the patience to learn new computer skills and I'm terrible at it. Luckily my husband is very handy and I use designers that I find on FIverr.
