Interview with J'nae Rae Spano

Published 2016-08-19.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Bring my characters to life. I love to explore their lives and personalities.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm looking forward to having them, as I'm new to this. I want people to enjoy what I've written.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a short piece based off a friend's song. I'm also working on Náidin's Song: Twins. The story will go back to his beginning.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.R.R. Tolkien, Raymond E. Feist, Terry Brooks, Guy Gavriel Kaye, Mercedes Lackey, Andre Norton, and Ursula K. Le Guin.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Odd, question. I don't think we need inspiration to get out of bed. Life some what dictates we must. Of course, my cat, Narsil, demands his breakfast.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working or acting.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Suggestions by people or a search for a title I'm interested in.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Don't really remember the stories I had to write in 5th grade weekly. I remember the first one I started. Elements find their way into my other stories. Náidin's Song: Blood Bound is the first story I completed. Though it's had some edits since.
What is your writing process?
I follow an idea and let the characters take me on the ride.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Other than assigned reading, once I learned to read which was a struggle for me I devoured Greek Mythology. Loved it.
How do you approach cover design?
Well, this is the first I've had to do it. I pulled in image out of my head and did a digital painting. Then found the other elements I wanted and had April at do my cover layout for me. I think she did a beautiful job.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Lord of the Rings. It had the biggest impact on me. I love the depth of Tolkien's world.
What do you read for pleasure?
Fantasy and Science Fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle Paperwhite.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Gresham, Oregon. It's just outside Portland. My 5th grade teacher always made us do a weekly creative writing assignment. I found I loved writhing stories.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Náidin's Song: Blood Bound came about as whet I call a knee jerk reaction. After seeing Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies, I became intrigued by dwarves that weren't course and ugly and the possibility of dwarves and elves together. That is something you don't see or didn't until the movies. I didn't think the relationship belonged in the movie, but thought the concept needed a story where it fit.
