Interview with Lisa Nicell Treanor

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I am either painting, working on a sculpture, designing furniture or reading.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of paranormal books as I have a massive interest in this subject. I also love history books, science fiction and steampunk.
Describe your desk
My desk is not the neatest! I like to work on several projects at a time so it can become quite cluttered. I have an old antique writing desk which was once owned by the famous Irish writer Padraic Colum. He was a poet, novelist, dramatist, biographer, playwright, children's author and collector of folklore. The desk has great patina and is covered in old ink stains. It gives me great pleasure to sit and work at the desk, knowing who once sat there before me.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Irish midlands. I guess the the ancient ruins, castles, howling wind, rain and exposure to Irish ghost stories whilst sitting by an open fire have contributed in some way to my rambling imagination!
What's the story behind your latest book?
The influence behind 'Once Upon A Time Slip' is my ever growing curiosity to understand the universe and how it works. I love having conversations with people about where the universe first came from, whether or not there is an afterlife, who created us and so on. I often like to come up with my own theories on poltergeists, hauntings and the like. I truly believe time travel is a real possibility.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I think life is too short to sit around and wait to be discovered. It's important to take risks and put yourself out there. I greatly admire indie authors for their patience, determination and dedication to learning the sometimes complex skills required to self publish a book. Writing the book is definitely the easiest part of it all. Becoming an entrepreneur, outsourcing the work to freelancers, learning how to distribute, market and promote your book is the biggest and most rewarding challenge. It is a true learning curve. Being known as an indie author is somewhat like a badge of honor, on par with the actual writing of a book.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a lifeline for every indie author, the true friend who supports you on your journey to sharing your talent with the world. Smashwords is the fairy godmother who helps to make your dreams come true.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to escape reality and having the power to redesign the world. It also helps you to put yourself in a different pair of shoes which means that you can develop as a person by learning from the characters that you create.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are just as important to me as the very characters in my book. Without them there would be no book. The book can only come to life within the mind of the reader. The world I create within the book can only come to life through the breath drawn from fans. Fans are the very fabric of the magic dust that brings the book to life. I am forever grateful to them.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on the sequel to 'Once Upon A Time Slip!'
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Apart from my loving husband and two beautiful sons, the thought of having another day to work on creating something that excites me, be it a painting, sculpture or a piece of writing.
