Interview with Nick Eager

Published 2021-01-01.
When did you first start writing?
I've written all of my life. My teachers gave interesting prompts to write. My grandmother would encourage me to sit and write when I visited her. In high school I made several short stories. Lately, I've written several novels. Some are being published here in the Earth Reset series.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It is like a vacation for me to sit and to develop my thoughts. It is a great relief for me to figure out how to solve issues that I'm dealing with by writing about them.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have struggled to deal with ideas for our future. I want to be hopeful, but there are so many things that can go wrong. While working professionally on the issue of solar flares, I had to take a break to write my thoughts about what would happen if the electric grid went down permanently and the economy collapsed.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I thought it would be easier to have a large publisher help to publicize my writing. However, self-publishing allows for greater control.
What is your writing process?
I spend much more time planning a story than writing it. Often, the issues in the stories are ones that I've been dealing with for years. As I write my ideas and organize them, I look for solutions. Sometimes it will take the form of a book series, as it has for Earth Reset. My outlines are very detailed. Writing a story is pleasurable because all that I am doing is creatively expanding my outline into a narrative. I find the time during a long vacation to get a started writing, and then I finish whenever I have time. Friends and family give me advice when they proof it. I am never done writing until it is published.
What are you working on next?
There are several possible stories to be told in this series, a prequel series, and spinoffs. I will continue in this series until the main story is told, then after that is to be determined.
Who are your favorite authors?
It seems like I used to live in libraries. I would spend hours browsing from aisle to aisle. I picked a variety of books to read including the classic authors.
Why are keeping anonymous?
The primary reason for anonymity is that I don't want my writing to interfere with my professional responsibilities. I am involved in work related to solar flares. That helps with realistic writing about the issue, but it brings up the possibility that my professional work would be taken seriously.
Secondly, I've exposed my soul. It takes bravery to openly admit things about yourself publicly.
