Interview with Nicky Jones

What do you read for pleasure?
I love reading and always have done. I began with the Enid Blyton books. Loved them so much. Enid really captured my young imagination, something I strive to do with my own children's stories. It is so special when a youngster comes and tells me how they enjoyed one of my books, thrilling, in fact. I now read a wide variety of books, from historical novels, to action thrillers, from mind-body & spirit, to romance.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle. I often read using my smart phone. The Kindle app on it makes it possible to read anytime, anywhere. I love it!
Describe your desk
My desk looks like it is very disorganised, but I know what each scrap of paper is for, and where everything is, despite the perceived muddle. My computer sits centre stage. It is one of those cordless computers. I need that so I can spread all my doodles and notelets around without fear of them being caught up or swept onto the floor.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing some 25 years ago, after an encounter with a ghostly cat! It was such an amazing happening I simply had to set pen to paper! and I have never looked back.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is a very long one. The short version is: Birds interacting was my initial inspiration. I could hear the birds in my garden twittering away. They always stopped as I stepped outside, but then seemed to say: "It's okay, only her, we can carry on." And of course they did. Then came my quest for the truth of why we are here on Earth & communicating that to others became a primary motivation. These threads are interwoven into my book TOBY FLETCHER'S FLY-AWAY TREE - Book One - THE SONG-SHELL TRUTHS. I also added in for good measure, the story of two children, one who is being bullied at school. This all makes for an action packed, magical woodland adventure.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Waiting 3 months at a time to get a SORRY but NO reply from agents & publishes. Life's too short! Decided to do it myself!
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! I just love getting feedback. I never tire of seeing the delight in the eyes of a child who has just read my book.
What are you working on next?
The second in the series of the Toby Fletcher's Fly-Away Tree books.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have 2 horses which I ride and look after and a Cocker Spaniel dog called Daisy. I love to garden, walk, cook, and care for my grown up family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Recomendation mainly; sometimes on twitter.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One of Enid Blyton's stories, The Island of Adventure, probably. So exciting and a great read. I had to read all her books after that.
How do you approach cover design?
I try and do it myself as I have an artistic eye.

Imagine flying free like a bird. Imagine changing into a bird then back into your own body at will. This is exactly what happens to Toby Fletcher. Bullied at school, Toby takes refuge in his hobby, bird watching. When the bullies hurt a blackbird, he rescues it, takes the fledgling home, and places it in his tree. This kind act turns an ordinary tree into a magical Fly-Away Tree.
