Interview with Nicola M. Cameron

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a crafter with a capital Craft. If I'm not writing I'm knitting, quilting, building dollhouses, designing jewelry, reading a lot, and indulging in the occasional binge session of TV.
When did you first start writing?
Third grade, when we were told to write an original Christmas story. I had just watched Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer the night before, so I wrote a sequel where he and his best friend had to rescue a wounded Abominable Snowman who was trapped in a blizzard. My teacher wanted to send it to a magazine, but asked me if it was original. Not understanding what she meant, I said that it wasn't (meaning that I'd used the character of Rudolph, which to my eight-year-old mind belonged to Rankin/Bass). That was that. I could have been published when I was eight, but nooooo...
What's the story behind your latest book?
I went to Toronto last October for a writer's retreat with my publishing company, and stayed a few days beforehand with my friend L.D. Blakeley. When she found out I hadn't seen the reboot of WESTWORLD she said, "That's silly--you write SF romance. Sit down, I'm cueing it up."

OMG, it was so good. And it didn't hurt that I found one of the actors absolutely breathtaking (and no, it wasn't James Marsden). And then at dinner later that week our publisher's PR manager mentioned that cyborg romance was VERY hot at the moment. Inspirational series + new celebrity crush + hot market promptly melded into a plot bunny that turned into DEGREE OF RESISTANCE, and by the end of the retreat I had a general arc worked out for five more books in the series. I love it when carbonating hormones wind up being productive.
What do your fans mean to you?
I think they're freaking amazing and make this odd, solitary career worth it. I've gotten incredible feedback and praise for my work from my readers over the years (such as my #1 fan in Australia -- hi, Ceit!) and I absolutely love that they enjoy my weird worlds and adventures.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating worlds for the characters who live in my head. I love watching what they do in a story because they always manage to surprise me and do something I didn't expect.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that I have five cats who need to be fed and watered before they eat me in my sleep.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
That was the Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer story I mentioned earlier. Considering that I was eight when I wrote it, it wasn't half bad.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My first indie book EMPRESS OF STORMS was written as a dare, part of which required it to be an indie novel. In one year I wound up making almost twice as much on that one title as I did from eight traditionally published titles over four years. As you can understand, tt quickly became a business decision to become a hybrid author and keep a foot in both camps.

Being an indie author isn't all roses, however. I'm responsible for everything to do with the book, from finding a good editor and cover artist to publication, promotion, and options such as foreign language translation and audiobooks. It's a complicated process, and I'm still learning the ins and outs of how to be successful as an indie author.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh, lord, we don't have two hours to go over all of them. Terry Pratchett, Kage Baker, Anne Rice, Jacqueline Carey, Tiffany Reisz, Charlaine Harris, Esther Friesner, Elizabeth Moon, Laurann Dohner, Diana Gabaldon, and Craig Johnson are definitely up there.
What are you working on next?
As Nicola, I'm going to finish and self-pub a historical MMF romance called BEHIND THE IRON CROSS set in Weimar Republic-era Berlin. I'm also editing an alternate history mystery called A MOST MALICIOUS MURDER which I'll publish under my science fiction author name.
