Interview with Nicola Marsh

Published 2018-07-12.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love the freedom to create. To be able to sit in my own little world and bring to life the characters and stories that I hope bring joy to my readers.
14 years after my first book hit the shelves, I still pinch myself that I get to do my dream job.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. The loyalty of readers is so powerful and as an author, it is a precious thing.
I'm an avid reader and fan girl of several authors, so I know the time it takes to read and review a book.
Each and every review counts so when a fan does that for my books, I'm very grateful.
What are you working on next?
A fun, flirty romance with a deeper undertone. So a cross between women's fiction and romance.
Who are your favorite authors?
Barbara O'Neal, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Lisa Gardner.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Raising my own dashing young heroes, cooking, reading and cheering on my Aussie Rules team, the North Melbourne Kangaroos. I'm a BIG fan!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually by word of mouth online.
So if there's a buzz around a particular book and I see it on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Goodreads, etc...I check it out.
I also scan the Top 100 books on Amazon regularly.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was ten years old and wrote about the new squirrel monkeys at the Melbourne Zoo.
The Herald Sun newspaper were running a competition so I entered and actually won a prize!
What is your writing process?
I love to brainstorm with pen and paper first so I love scrawling in an notebook to get the imaginative juices flowing.
Then it's onto Scrivener, which I swear helps me write faster.
I discovered the joys of Scrivener a few years back and have written every book on it since.
How do you approach cover design?
I think covers are an integral part of the book so I spend hours scouring the sites for the right picture that encapsulates the story, then buy and forward it to my trust cover artist who's happy to do as much back and forth as required to get it just right.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance is still my first love, but I'm a huge thriller fan too.
I'm riding the wave of domestic suspense/psychological thrillers too at the moment so am devouring as many of those books as I can.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Because it simulates the feel of a book with the cover I have, I love it.
Describe your desk
In a word? Messy!
When did you first start writing?
As a child, when I kept a daily diary, that got progressively more interesting when I hit my teens!
I still have those diaries...they're highly embarrassing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The freedom to create coupons, change price, etc...across all retailers at once is excellent for a time-poor author like me.
