Interview with Anya Tenney

What is your favorite book, and why?
"A Hero of Our Time" by M.Lermontov
Mikhail Lermontov is my favorite author. I grew up in the same province he did, and so my class often went on a school trip to his country estate. Some of the memories from those trips served as an inspiration for my first book "Tinted Fire"
I have read "A Hero of Our time" countless times. It is one of those rare books that make you realize more each time you read it. You hate Pechorin at first, than you love him, then you pity him, and maybe even understand him. There is something intimate about reading another person's journal.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading world's classics and fan fiction. Slightly odd combination, I agree.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Tablet
Describe your desk
Computer, two screens, wacom tablet, pencil cup, file holder, candy (I like candy)
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small provincial town in Russia. L. Tolstoi, A. Pushkin, M. Lermontov, Gorkii, Chekhov, Dostoevski... I loved reading their books growing up. I still do. Their works are so deep and full of meaning. They served as a great example to me of what to strive for in my own writing.
When did you first start writing?
It was three years ago, in 2011.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The idea for "Tinted Fire" came to me when I was in my first year in college. I was doodling in my math class (I was an art major, not that it is any excuse) and drew the first sketch for my main character. Then later I drew another one of my characters. And another one. And another one. I didn't have a story yet but showed the pictures to my friend Kim. She was really enthusiastic and helped be to begin the story.
One day she said, "Hey, you need an antagonist!"
I replied, "You are right, I do!"
That is how Alrik was born. It took a year to develop a story and start writing. I wanted to create something unique, memorable, something people had never heard before... Whether I succeeded or not is up to you.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
If people had a good time reading my book then I'm happy.
What are you working on next?
I have started working on a sequel for "Tinted Fire" You can find out more information on my website tintedfire.com
