Interview with Tyler Dobbert

What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is A Candid Discussion on Freedom of Expression. Paying attention to the news through various outlets both mainstream and independent, it seems some days that the world is going insane. I wanted to write down some sort of essay on why I believe in the ideals of the rights I have, for my sake mostly. However, I thought it might be a good idea to show my thoughts to the world, and hopefully either help change minds, or even have mine changed if my information turns out incorrect. I'm always looking for new experiences, new information, and more reasons to write.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
What motivated me was my financial situation. I don't have the money to try traditional publishing, so I decided to try the self publishing market.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
So far, from all my research, Smashwords seems to be a good choice of publishing platform. It's centralized, distributes to all the major ebook publishers, and beyond that, the style guide and templates were immensely helpful. I honestly learned many things about Microsoft word that I had never even known before.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I just enjoy entertaining people. I like to tell interesting stories, I like to express myself, and I tend to be a little awkward in face to face conversation. Writing is a means of expression, a powerful one at that, one where you can transcend the limits of your own social presence and become a force to truly be reckoned with.
Beyond that, it's also hell'a fun.
What do your fans mean to you?
Honestly, I'll be happy if anyone even takes the time to look at my work, much less buy it. To find that someone wants to enjoy my work makes me feel accomplished. It gives me those warm fuzzies inside.
What are you working on next?
At this point I am uncertain. However, I have many novels and short stories on my backburner, and once my life straightens out a little more, I may well spin my way onto those and throw them out to the world at large.
Who are your favorite authors?
Some of my favorite authors include several fantasy writers. R.A Salvatore writes many Dungeon and Dragon's official books, and has the honor of being my top favorite author right now thanks to his character Drizzt Do'Urden. Beyond that, I would also Include J.K Rowling (Harry Potter) and David Clement-Davies (The Sight).
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
What inspires me to get out of bed is the desire to improve myself. I've learned recently that the only way anything ever gets done is by you doing it. No one else is going to do the work you need to do to be successful.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When not writing, I watch Anime and play video games, work out. I currently work as a truck driver, which certainly takes up most of my time.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I don't really read many ebooks, to be honest. I prefer my books in paperback. I do however have several audiobooks I listen to. I discovered them by learning about the author and looking up to see where his work was. The front page of the store really helps as well.
