Interview with Noel Wellington

Published 2020-08-03.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Hi, I am Noel Wellington, and I am a workaholic. It just so happened, that 4 years ago I sat down and started the actual writing of The God's Bracelet. I had notes about this project from quite some time ago, and they first had to be arranged into the plan and further expanded into the books. Since then, alas, I did not have any spare time. I had the actual day job that paid my bills, until the pandemic struck, and since then I simply spend all the time on writing, formatting, working with an editor, a graphic artist, and proof-readers. How I wish I spent my free time? Well, likely at a farm, on horseback, in my favorite western saddle. Probably, when my books become bestsellers, I might ride again.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I must confess that until I started reading Mark Coker's self-publishing guides, eBook was not a thing for me. Oh, well, it was, but only as long as it was LaTeX documentation in PDF format from CTAN. Being old-school, I only ever read paper books, until very recently. This is going to change, and I yet have to work out a good way to discover eBooks.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh, yes, I certainly do! It was an attempt to take part in a fan-fiction writing challenge for a youth magazine. As to when it was, I have a vague idea. It probably happened around 1982.
What is your writing process?
Sometimes I likes to sits and writes, and sometimes I just likes to sits. Seriously, most of the time I just type away, while the ideas just appear in my head. Other times it does not work, and I jot notes for a plan that I later fill out with content.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, I do not. I read so much, when I was a child, that it is hard to remember the very first one.
How do you approach cover design?
The toughest part is to decide what images best represent the gist of the book. I muse on it for some time, and then I run my vision of it by my family members, who are a bunch of book lovers with diverse interests. Then I doodle the draft and give it to the graphic artist. After some back and forth, a cover is born.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like reading on a PC with as large of a monitor as possible.
Describe your desk
It is an old, office desk, with two PCs and two monitors on it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Soviet Union, in the 70s, during the Cold War. There was a shortage of everything, including books to read. I loved history books but longed for fiction, which was pretty scarce. I began to make up my own fiction, although I started writing it down much, much later, when I already lived in Canada.
Who contributed the most to your choice of topics?
My children did. The very first book that I planned to write was the one that ended up becoming the 2nd book of The God's Bracelet trilogy. I suggested to them that we could write a scenario for a video game, and we jotted down the ideas for the plot together. If not for them, I would have never seriously considered writing or publishing.
When did you first start writing?
In 1982 I wrote a few pages of science fiction for a youth magazine's writing challenge.
What are you currently working on?
My work is split approximately equally between the finishing of the 2nd book in The God's Bracelet trilogy: Double Hazard; the editing of the 1st book: Finding Ishtar; and the writing of my next novel: Evil, 100%.
