Interview with Rocco Norman Lim

What prompted you to write this book – Fat Loss Made Simple?
Like anyone who wanted to be healthy and fit, they were probably on some kind of diet and exercise regime. I was one of those too, unfortunately the diet and exercise regime that I was on in the past either did not work or if worked, disappointingly, I would only gain back every single pound I lost within a short period of time. So, I decided to do my own research on fat loss and discovered that it is actually a very simple process! All you need to know are what exercises would be most effective in burning fat and how to manipulate the intake of foods in order to maximize your body’s natural fat burning process. There is no need for expensive diets, supplements, exercise machines or restrictive eating plans. Aside from maximizing fat burn from manipulating the intake of foods also allows you to continue to consume foods that you like which will be sustainable in the long term.
Your book titled Fat Loss Made Simple, is it really simple?
Once you understand the concept I share in my book on fat loss, you would see that fat loss is a simple process. And when you follow the principles that I share, you will lose the fat, resulting in a body with majority lean muscle mass and best of all a higher metabolic rate which would then prevent you from gaining back the fat that you lost.
There are so many books on weight loss, getting fit, staying slim etc. What makes your book different?
I have several books on diet and weight loss in my collection as I had been trying to get lean and fit but I gained back every pound I lost. This was the turning point for me where I realized that whatever weight loss program is out there, it must be sustainable in the long term. So, this was my main objective when I set out to do research on fat loss and how to lose it permanently. More importantly, you want to lead a normal life where you want to still be able to enjoy all the foods and drinks you like just like everyone else except not wanting to gain back the weight lost. Anyone can lose fat if they abstain from foods right? However, It is obviously unhealthy and certainly not something you can do for the rest of your life. Or if you only consume low calorie meal replacements, you will lose the weight but is it sustainable in the long term? The moment you consume normal foods, you will gain it all back and more because your body has adjusted itself by lowering your metabolic rate in order for you to survive on such a low calorie diet.

To achieve your weight loss goal, you need to know what exercises to do and how to manipulate intake of food so that your body is in fat burning mode. To maintain your weight in the long term you need to already have built a lean muscle mass and a high metabolic rate. If you follow the principles that I share in my book, you would lose the fat and develop lean muscle mass and high metabolic rate. Thus, making your body bullet proof for weight gain.

More importantly, I am not a fitness expert nor professional athlete , who are blessed with strong physical traits and who work out for a living. I sit in an office from 9a.m. to 6p.m. When I started the fat loss journey, I was 45 years old weighed in at 104 kg, with a full time job, a full time father to a 9 year old boy and a fulltime husband. Plus, I was also taking care of my aging parents, in their 80s.

I think my book is different from others in the sense that it is written for the average “Joe”; by an average “Joe.”
This book is then applicable to the average guy who is middle aged with a full time job and a family to take care off?
Absolutely right! If you look at the concept of exercising efficiently and manipulating food intake that I share in my book, you would understand how fat loss works and how I manage to keep it off. And more importantly it’s simple. So, the concept is applicable to everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or nationality.
You mentioned that you set out to do your own research on Fat Loss and more importantly on how to keep it off. Could you share what kind of research you have done?
I am a corporate banker for 22 years now and part of my job requires a lot of analysis and research to be done on corporations. So, instead of looking at financial and economic data, I was looking at all the available information on fat loss as well as why most people who had lost the weight gain it back. And more importantly I used myself as an experiment.
So you do not have any background in medical science, professional physical training nor dietitian qualification?
That is correct.
So what makes you think that readers would want to read and follow your principles and recommendations in your book while there are so many books out there written by authors who are either medically qualified or is a professional fitness coach?
Fat Loss is a simple process, all you need to do is to understand how certain types of exercises burn more fat, increase lean muscle mass and metabolic rate as well as how certain types of food consumed at certain times of the day will hinder your body’s natural fat burning process. That’s all you need to know. The information I share in my book will guide you through this process.
So if readers follow your book, can they eat anything they want?
Certainly not. You cannot drink beer and eat chips all day long and expect to lose fat. But once you understand how your body is affected by certain foods, you will then know how to manipulate your food intake to achieve maximum fat burn and at the same time eat foods that certainly would have been prohibited in any low calorie diet plan.
Would there be certain types of foods that you recommend readers to eat?
No, because it is all about manipulating intake of certain type of foods at certain times of the day. Readers would have plenty of alternatives and choices to choose from.
Would readers be required to have exercise and eating plans?
Yes, the book gives you all the understandings and principles on fat loss so that you can design your own exercise and eating plan. That is the key to this book because every one of us is different. Our body shape, our physical fitness level, our individual food preferences and our obligations to our career and family. My research shows that to lose weight and keep it off permanently, the eating and exercise routine has to be tailored and made to fit into a particular individual’s lifestyle and fitness level. Just like I created my own exercise and eating routine.
If you can speak to your readers who are trying to lose weight, what would you say to them?
Fat loss is a simple process once you understand the science behind it which I share in my book. Only you would know what type of exercise routine would work for you and as such, never ever follow exercise routines of other people be it professional athletes or other fitness experts. Similarly with manipulating intake of foods, there is no need to follow my eating plans or other people’s plans. Develop your own after you understand how certain types of foods affect your body’s fat burning ability.
