Interview with G.C. Wilson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Minnesota and spent a lot of time up north (that's what we call it in these parts) in the unspoiled wilderness. One day many, many years ago I said to myself, sometime I am going to write a story a about the wilds of northern Minnesota.
When did you first start writing?
When my wife and I lived on the North Shore of Lake Superior in the late 90s. One cold winter day while looking out at frigid Lake Superior, I remembered what I said to myself when I was kid. No better time than the present to get started, I convinced myself. Thus, I launched myself into my first book, Spirit Of The North Woods. After I finished it I put it aside for a long time. Then a few years ago, I decided to rewrite (did that countless times) and publish it. Soon thereafter I wrote a couple of short stories.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Spirit Of The North Woods is based on some of my own adventures in The Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) in northern Minnesota with a strong emphasis on Ojibwa folklore and, my love for the rugged wilderness of northern Minnesota.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I always had the aspiration to write fantasy and adventure but until I met my wife and settled down, I just couldn't seem to find the time.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Writing is a new adventure for me and Smashwords has given me the opportunity to get my foot in the door.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Thrusting myself into the story and becoming one of the characters gets my creative juices flowing and I feel like I am actually living the adventure. This holds true for all that have read Spirit Of The North Woods or for anyone that is considering purchasing the book.
What are you working on next?
A children's book. It is titled - The Adventures Of Little Grunt The Gleeful Gorilla. It's a store about a 5 year old gorilla and his family taking a vacation in the mountains. it is his first real adventure out of his own neighborhood and he has many new, fun and exciting adventures. It is a learning story as well. Children of all ages will enjoy it as will adults.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are everything. Giving them something that they can really get into gives me great encouragement. If they enjoy what I write . . . that's what it's all about.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My wife and I enjoy hiking, biking and just being out in nature as much as possible. But at times, Minnesota winters make that very challenging. We are lovers of wildlife and I do a lot of outdoor photography. Some of my work can be seen on my website @
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Spirit Of The North Woods was my first. But, before its completion I wrote a short story titled - A Young Boys Fish Story. It is based on one of my Saturday fishing trips with my father and my uncle. Great nostalgia! Shortly thereafter I wrote another short story. It is a drama in real life story titled - In The Grip of The Ice Water Mansion. It is a true story about how my wife and I almost perished in the icy waters of Lake Superior. Both can be read free of charge on my website.
How do you approach cover design?
My daughter has friend that does great art work. I have the ideas but he makes them come to life. You can view and purchase his work VIA a link on my website.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Describe your desk
In one word . . . cluttered.
Who are your favorite authors?
J. R. R. Tolkien and Stephen King. Both inspired me.
