Interview with Debbie Renner

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee, cats and my New Year's resolution of no more procrastination. Plus if I have had a good nights sleep!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love watching action/Scifi movies depending on mood. I have many faves but Endgame makes me feel wistful, and Evolution and Independence Day lift my spirits. A bit of humor goes a long way. If I feel like tidying up, I watch the series Hoading, buried alive. LOL
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Search by genre usually. I wish I read more (feel so guilty) But never mind, I will be 'guilt free' for my next New Year's resolution come 2017.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The Magic Box when I was nine. No planning, it was done in the class room. Though I cannot remember details. Deep down I suspect it was inadvertently symbolic of my wanting to delve into dark places and spring out to shock people.
What is your writing process?
When I do, I try to in the mornings. It doesn't matter if I edit, add to it, practice query letters to literary agents, as long as it is something to do with the literary process.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Milly Molly Mandy series - feel good stuff for a youngster. Also, The Phantom Tollbooth - love the metaphors and the war between words and numbers, noise and colours. Brilliantly imaginative and simple. Ah that subtraction stew. Reckon that had a real effect on my brain waves for much later...
How do you approach cover design?
I have a vision and I try and relay it to an experienced cover designer. So far so good. I did the cover for Bad Habits, but rather employ an expert.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I am David — fascinated me as when I read it I was very young and knew nothing about war. When I eat an orange I think of that story now and then. Alice in Wonderland because I so relate to Alice's adventures and quirkiness in my protagonist Kate Willard. All the Milly Molly Mandy stuff - an age of sweetness. My OBF series (3) as I love painting a picture to set people's imaginations on fire, especially my own.
What do you read for pleasure?
Don't hate me - my old scripts, short stories and sometimes Sydney Sheldon. Occasional YA fanfiction online.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Old fashioned PC. I am no techo-junky as I also believe in Stephen King's Cell.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have not come across one yet that helps sell a few million copies, but online exposure is the best. I live in a small town, so signing books and going to launches etc is a wee bit far for me. LOL
Describe your desk
I have two - my cats were taking over my computer. So now I use one for writing stuff by hand, and patting the cats, the other with the computer. Both (desks) get messy until I can't stand it no more.
