Interview with OJ Whittaker

Who are your favorite authors?
David Gemmell, and David Eddings
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My three children, they give me such joy. An they things that kids say makes me laugh. I even have a book that I write some of the things that they say.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, and wondering why I'm still in my current job and not doing something I love. Which I hope to one day do. But when I do have spare time, I like to play with my kids, watch movies, read or play on my console.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I generally like to trawl through book shops and read the synopsis till something catches my interest. I'm a huge fantasy fan, blame Tolkien for that one. He got me at a very early age. I think I was nine when I first read The Lord of the Rings, and have now read it around twenty times and still find great joy in it.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was in my English class, and I was told to write a story about going to the shops to buy milk. It turned into a fantasy where a group of friends fought through demons and elves to reach the shops only for the milk to be sold out. My teach gave me an "F" for that one and pretty much stymied my passion for writing which didn't reignite till I was in my early twenties.
What is your writing process?
I tend to come with nucleus of the story first, then create a world around it, before getting the basics for the story down and starting the book off.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Bible, my parents were very religious and I had read it three times by the time I was nine. You'd think I was very religious myself, but I'm not. I tend to ere towards the side that they cause more problems than good, but to each his own.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a general idea for what I want, then draw it out myself and then give that to the real graphic artist for them to do the magic.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favourite books are: The Lord of the Rings (not the movie versions), Guardians of the West by David Eddings, he gave me lots of great times with his writings. Legend, by David Gemmell, Druss is one of my favourite characters of all time. Prospero Burns by Dan Abnett probably the best writer in the Warhammer 40K world. And Captive Prince by CS Pacat, she's a really nice person and writes really well.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have a varied genre of books that I read, but I ere more on the side of fantasy. I'm currently into the Horus Heresy series.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The computer or my Samsung
