Interview with Dr.Ozlem Kurdoglu

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been my breakthrough in presenting my work to the world with a plausible amount of effort. I'm an author of five sci-fi novels in Turkish, and dealing with the publishers of my country has never been much fun in the past. They are still selling my books, but I am kept in the dark about sales figures, percentages, etc.. I hated the idea of having to deal with the whims of print-publishers of my country again, and I thank Smashwords for providing my way out of the rut.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing helps me figure out the world, express what needs to be put out there, and carve out the real riches of life. Through writing I find my direction in life. Through my words I seek and serve justice, smooth out imbalances, find questions to insufficient answers from ill-willed people. When writing fiction, I create scenes to the effect that I desire. When writing non-fiction, I explore the universe and translate the truths that I discover into humanese.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are kindred souls who are nourished by my frequency/vibration. I am honored to present them with what they like to read, and maybe even emerge with an accomplishment from that experience. That accomplishment might be the recognition of a new pattern in life, or just a positive feeling that one of my scenes inspires in their minds and hearts.
What are you working on next?
I need to decide whether to translate my latest novel into English, or to write a new one in English. In the meantime I plan to continue with my non-fiction as well. There is an accumulation of info I need to unreel in the field of self-improvement.
Who are your favorite authors?
I started to read Isaac Asimov when I was just 11-12 years old. His style focuses on human interrelationships, and uses the whole galaxy as a background. Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, and his query about a possible collection of Laws about how the human brain works has been a secret beacon leading me to discover the intricacies of human nature. As a result of that spontaneous and lifelong research, today I find myself capable of quoting Four Laws of the Human Mind in its yet-to-be-awakened state. After the awareness threshold, rules change and gain further dimensions.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm bringing up my 12 year old daughter. I have a work life as a doctor. Apart from those, I have several creative outlets such as making natural gemstones into wearable accessories, photography, aquarium design, and various forms of handcrafts. I also love the freedom of the outdoors. I'm a search-and-rescuist and a scuba diver.
What is your writing process?
When writing fiction, I dream up an effective scene and start building up to that. A serial sequence of such effective scenes weave up to become my novels. Non-fiction, on the other hand, is very different. I rely heavily on scientific facts and proven research. There is a summons to the reader about pattern-recognizing new and exciting facts that will hopefully be helpful to them in life from that point on.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, unfortunately it's lost among the fog of the past. I must have read thousands of books until now, and I will probably read thousands more in the future.
What do you read for pleasure?
I never know anymore, till I meet it! In the past it was mainly sci-fi novels, or novels that focus on human relationships. In general I find myself driven to narratives of triumph, individuals or teams overcoming dark desperations in innovative and impressive ways. Other than that I'm mostly on research mode, reading or watching to complete some picture or other in my mind that needs atention to be fully figured out.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Any device with a manageable screen is fine by me.
Describe your desk
I'm a portable spirit. Anything I can place my netbook on can be transformed into my workspace, even a wide arm of an armchair, or my dining room table.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Ankara, raised and educated in Istanbul. Ten years ago I moved to a seaside resort in the Southern Aegean coast. So the urban big city child grew up to become rural seaside resident. There is a whole accumulation of experience that I learned a lot from, especially about what I'd rather avoid having in my life. There is a lot of false allure and enslaving illusion in life, and the complications of city atmosphere makes it difficult for a brain to tell wheat from chaff soon enough. I can now reflect from experience in my writing that everything that really matters in our lives is in fact safe, secure and sound. We are much more "okay" than most of us realize.
When did you first start writing?
When I was a middle school student. I had noticed that I enjoyed reading my own writing (oh my god I hope that doesn't sound freaky?) and I used to prepare myself long narratives to get back to and enjoy later. This went on until I had the whole half of my first novel brought together, then published in installments by a sci-fi magazine in Turkish that I participated in editing. I was a third year med student in college at that time.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I seriously dislike fear. I've always had the habit of refusing to wallow in it. I've always found myself capable of doing something, anything to override that queasy feeling. One day I recognized some pattern about fear inducing stimuli: Apart from natural disasters, most of it came from people acting awfully towards each other. Needlessly. Even when there was no apparent reason why it couldn't perfectly well be the other way around. People felt uneasy, and they made others feel uneasy in turn. But the vicious circle could be broken at some point, because there is the desire in every one of us for something better than what we've had so far. Awareness Is Bliss, and knowledge drives fear out. So it's good strategy to spread the knowledge.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had had enough of the unprofessional approaches from the publishers of my own country. They still sell my books, I can see them on the market, but the laws of copyright cannot be adequately followed in my country for a variety of practical reasons. I was very unwilling to go through the same grind with my new books and get my efforts taken advantage of at my expense. Now I know that I'm doing my own personal best, and my mind is at ease.
