Interview with Pandora Spocks

What's the story behind your latest book?
Rannigan's Redemption is a romantic drama about Michael Rannigan, a hotshot Manhattan attorney, and Maggie Flynn, the recent law school grad he hires to join his elite high-profile defense practice.

Professionally, Michael is smart enough to surround himself with great legal minds. They do all the leg-work and he breezes in and saves the day for their very wealthy, very grateful clients. Privately, Michael is an inveterate player. As one reviewer put it, "his commitment issues have commitment issues."

Maggie had a completely different plan for her career after graduation, but when she spies Michael at a job fair, she can't resist interviewing with him. She's studied his cases and she knows he's one of the best. But not lost on her are the facts that he's charming, handsome, and sexy as hell.

Michael prefers to date Barbie look-alikes with significantly lower IQs than Maggie's. Still, he's drawn to her in an unnervingly undeniable way.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wrote my first novel, Luke & Bella: Two Streets Over a chapter at a time, posting them online just for kicks. Much to my surprise, people were reading the chapters and clamoring for more. When the story was finished, and I'd posted it twice in its entirety, I thought maybe it would be interesting to publish the whole thing as a book and see what happened.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has enabled me to reach more readers in many more venues and formats than I did previously. They also enable me to run promotions when I want to, something that other online publishers don't do. Smashwords provides simple and easily accessible statistics regarding views, sample downloads, and sales of my books, which makes it easier for me to track the trends and see where I need to amp up my promotions.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love starting with a general idea of where my story starts and where it's going and then being completely surprised by how we all get there. My characters come to life for me and steer the action in ways I could never have foreseen. It's really quite magical how it all comes together. Sometimes when I go back and reread, it's as though someone else wrote it.
What do your fans mean to you?
I want to write stories that people love to read, stories that stick with them long after they've finished reading. When someone tells me that they enjoy my work, it's exceedingly validating.
What are you working on next?
I'm still editing the second and third parts of Rannigan's Redemption.

Beyond that, I'm considering creating a new category of books (Luke & Bella: Two Streets Over would become the first in that series) that would be called the Gentleman Dominant Series. This would be for my stories that have a BDSM theme. I have many friends in the BDSM community and I began to toy with the idea about a widowed submissive whose Dominant husband dies unexpectedly and leaves provision for her submissive needs. So I've started a new book called For Sparrow, which would be the second Gentleman Dominant book.
Who are your favorite authors?
My tastes are kind of eclectic. I've always loved Stephen King, Tom Clancy, Rebecca Wells, Maeve Binchy, Patricia Cornwell, Janet Evanovich, and Sue Grafton.

But my heroes are Maggie Carpenter, Amber Lea Easton, Natasha Blackthorne, and Patient Lee.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Sadly, writing is not paying the bills currently, so I work a more-than-full-time job as a 'highly qualified professional educator.' When I'm not working or writing, I love to spend time with my sweet. We take walks on the beach, sip cocktails at fine local establishments, sing along to classic rock radio, watch great cable television, and just hang out on our acreage in the country.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Honestly, I see great reads in the Tweet groups in which I participate. I'm honored to be involved with many highly talented writers.
How do you approach cover design?
I endeavor to convey a feeling with my covers, sort of like an impressionist painting or something. While I write literary erotica, I refuse to believe that the only way for me to sell books is to put nudies on the front. My hope is that my covers communicate an overall feel about the story inside.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1) Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood--This book opened my eyes to the reality that in life most of us are doing the absolute best that we can, and for many of us, it's better than was done for us. Also, I don't think more beautiful words have ever been written than the opening chapter.

2) Chocolat--Just a beautiful story.

3) Angela's Ashes--I laughed, I cried, simply amazing.

4) Leaves of Grass--If you have to ask why...

5) Delta of Venus--Anias Nin was brilliant and way ahead of her time.
